NDSCS wideout is ready to show what he can do

Schools are always looking for wideouts that they can plug in almost anywhere and who can be productive outside or in the slot. NDSCS WR Shamir Akhdar (5-10.5, 182) is a prospect that has a lot to offer and after seeing limited reps as a freshman, he's ready for a breakout season in 2012...

Akhdar prepped at Champagnat Catholic in Hialeah, Florida and was unable to qualify, so he headed north in order to continue his football career.

"I was getting looks from a couple of schools, but when I didn't qualify, I talked to my coach and he said this was a good place to go to," Akhdar told JCFootball.com. "I was going to redshirt last season, but I ended up playing half the season and I feel like this is going to be a good season for me."

While seeing limited reps in 2011, Akhdar hauled in eight receptions for 174 yards and he's hoping this fall will be even better.

"I played the 'z' spot for us which is on the outside," Akhdar said. "I can play anywhere though -- inside, outside. I feel like my release is good and I can read coverages well and that helps me get open more."

On the recruiting front, things have been a little slow, but should pick up this spring after schools start to get a better look at what he can do.

"Kansas State was recruiting me in high school and they are still giving me looks and I also have been talking to Tulane," Akhdar said. "I've been working hard this offseason and I hope I get more attention once schools get a chance to see me."

Even though he has yet to get an offer, he has started to think about what he's looking for in the school that he ultimately ends up signing with.

"Academics are first and foremost for me," Akhdar noted. "My mom has really stressed that to me since high school and it's something that I've finally started to take it really seriously.

"I also just want to feel comfortable with the environment and if I can see myself staying there for two or three years."

Akhdar is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
