Brown prepped at North High School in Torrance, California and played multiple positions, but was only recruited by smaller programs, so he decided to head to Santa Monica to see if bigger opportunities might come along.
"I didn't get as much exposure as I probably could have, so I decided I wanted to give myself a chance to develop a little more and see if I could get a D-1 offer," Brown said. "I loved the atmosphere here and the program is great. The coaches are really good too and I felt like I fit into their system here really well."
As a prep, Brown played mainly offense, but made the switch to linebacker once he arrived at Santa Monica.
"I felt really good about moving because I always thought I was a prototypical linebacker with my size and my weight," Brown said. "My dream is to go to the NFL, so I felt like moving to linebacker gave me the best shot at doing that."
In his first year of playing the position, Brown was solid, posting 40 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack.
"My strength is pass-coverage and it's something that I take pride in," Brown said. "With the way offenses are playing nowadays, with the spread and the west coast offense, they are passing more and linebackers really have to be good in that area and it comes naturally to me so that helps a lot.
"This offseason I'm working really hard on understanding the game better, reading offenses and formations so I can make more plays and position myself better."
On the recruiting front things have been a bit slow, but Brown said he hopes things pick up during the spring.
"We start spring ball on Monday (April 16th) and our coaches think we will start to see some interest from schools when they come by our practices," Brown said. "I'm just working on the things I can control right now and I'll worry about the recruiting stuff later, but I definitely hope that schools take a look at me and see what I can do."
Since Brown was a full-qualifier out of high school, he can leave at any time, but he expects to return to Santa Monica this fall and will have three years to play two following the 2012 football season.
