Jones ready to show everyone what he can do

After redshirting in 2011 while focusing on his academics and getting ready for his college football career to get underway, Fort Scott WR Larves Jones (6-4, 210) told recently that he hopes a big 2012 football season will result in some scholarship offers...

Jones prepped at Omaha (Ne.) North High School and because he was unable to qualify academically, he got some help getting placed at Fort Scott.

"The Nebraska coaches helped place me here," Jones told "I wasn't really sure right away, but then I saw how many good players had come through here and (the Nebraska coaches) said it would be a great place for me, so I came here and redshirted last season. Now I'm ready to show people, and myself really, what I can do."

With his ideal size and athleticism, to go along with his 4.5 speed, Jones is an intriguing prospect and, even though he hasn't played a down of football at the JUCO level, schools are showing him quite a bit of early interest.

"A lot of schools have been coming by our school this spring and I've talked to a lot of coaches," Jones said. "California has been by, Penn State, SMU, Louisiana Tech, Nebraska of course, and a few others too.

"I don't have any offers yet, but I've been talking to all of those coaches and I'm hoping that they like me enough this spring to come after me, but I know they might need to see more of me this fall before that happens."

Jones said he's been hard at work this offseason trying to get faster, doing speed drills and footwork drills that will help him.

"I'm more of a possession guy so I want to get my speed better," Jones said. "If I had to compare myself to a receiver out there, I'd probably have to say I was most like Plexico Burress.

"I'm working with our quarterbacks, especially Dillon Barrett, on getting our timing down and also just working on my routes. It's all about what I do this offseason that will help me this fall."

Jones is on pace to finish up his AA degree in December and he will have three years to play three following the 2012 football season.
