Blinn QB decides to sign with Memphis

As the trigger-man for one of the top JUCO programs in the country, Blinn QB Eric Mathews (6-1, 183) could have returned to play for the Bucs in 2012 and possibly earned quite a few offers. However, after weighing his options and taking into account several factors, he decided to head to Memphis to play for the Tigers starting next week...

"I made my decision and I'm going to play for Memphis for the next three years," an excited Mathews told "I talked to my parents, both my mom and my dad, and I looked at the program and the way the coaches stuck by me through this whole process and I just felt like it was the best place for me.

"Their offense is perfect for me because it's just like Blinn's. You run some spread, some pro-set, all of it and it's going to be a lot of fun to get in and really learn it."

As a freshman this past season, Mathews led the Bucs to a 9-2 record while passing for 2,399 yards, 20 touchdowns and only two interceptions and rushing for 717 and 13 more scores.

He admitted earlier this year to that he probably took off running a little too early, so that is an area he has worked on this summer.

"I still have a lot to work on," Mathews admitted. "I'm trying to get my footwork better, so I can slide easier in the pocket.

"I admit that sometimes I was too eager to run and didn't wait for things to happen, so if I can get my footwork better and slide in the pocket more, then that will allow me to keep plays alive."

As a prep at Brookshire (Tx.) Royal High School, Mathews qualified to play at the D-2 level, but decided to go the JUCO route so he could have a chance at playing at the highest level.

"I was going to go to Texas A&M-Kingsville, but I talked to one of my coaches and he said I should go to Blinn and give D-1 a shot," Mathews said. "It was a good decision for me."

In addition to his offer from the Tigers, Mathews also had an offer from Texas State.

Mathews will finish a class he's taking this summer later this week and then plans to arrive in Memphis on Monday to begin fall camp.
