"I committed to Memphis," an excited Gaines told JCFootball.com. "I decided to sign with them and I'll be playing with Eric Mathews there this fall."
Gaines' decision came after seeing interest from several other schools, but not offers.
"I had TCU and Colorado State and Kansas State that were recruiting me, but Memphis is the one that offered," Gaines noted. "It was the right opportunity and they have a great staff there. I just felt it was my time to get going and get my four-year career started."
As a six-game starter for the Bucs this past season, Gaines notched 24 tackles (14 solo) while posting five passes defensed. He admitted he's been working hard on different aspects of his game so he can be a real playmaker at the next level.
"I've been working on focusing more and just having a good work ethic," Gaines said. "I always need to stay positive and not let things affect how I react. I need to focus on the next play when something goes wrong the play before and that's been something I've been working on."
Gaines is a good student and was a full-qualifier after graduating from Westfield High School in Houston. He was lightly recruited, so he decided to head to Blinn.
"I wasn't really recruited so I was looking around and Blinn was the school that saw something in me and they wanted me," Gaines noted.
He will enroll at Memphis on Monday (August 6th) and will take part in fall camp almost immediately.
Gaines will have four years to play three once he arrives on campus.
