Peko's recruiting is blowing up

A player proving to be one of the more popular JUCO prospects in Southern California is Cerritos DL Kyle Peko (6-2, 295) and he has the offers to prove it. Recently, got an update from the talented recruit on which school has offered and which program could be very close to jumping into the mix as well...

"I have offers from BYU, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Texas Tech, UNC Charlotte and Utah," Peko told recently. "I am also hearing that Boise State could be close to offering soon too, so that is another one, but that's about it."

Peko prepped at La Habra (Ca.) High School and was unable to get qualified to play at the D-1 level, so he headed to Cerritos where he had a family as well as a coaching connection.

Coach (Frank) Mazzotta's son, Frank Mazzotta Jr., was my coach in high school, so that was a big reason why I ended up here and then both of my cousins and my dad went here and went pro, so it was the right place for me," Peko told recently.

As a freshman defensive lineman last fall, Peko was a force to be reckoned with racking up 39 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries while playing every spot along the line.

"I played a lot of the three (technique) and a lot of nose and a lot of end too," Peko said. "I played mostly the three though.

"I would say I'm probably best at stopping the run because I'm strong and I'm powerful and I'm quick off the line so I get into gaps a lot."

This offseason, Peko said he's been hard at work pushing his teammates to get better so they can finish on top, something they fell a game short of last year.

"We played well last season, but we just didn't make plays toward the end to go further (in the playoffs)," Peko said. "This season I want to be a leader. Everyone talks about leading though and I'm more about leading with my actions."

Peko is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2012 football season.
