Dison, AVC Rally To Win Shootout Over Chaffey

Derrick Dison threw for 199 yards and 4 touchdowns, and host Antelope Valley scored the last 16 points of the game to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 44-35 win over Chaffey Saturday night at Brent Carder Marauder Stadium in Lancaster.

AVC won despite tremendous performances by Chaffey (0-2) quarterback Harrison Stewart, who passed for 357 yards and 4 touchdowns, and wide receiver Alex Jefferies, who caught 7 passes for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns. The final Stewart-to-Jefferies touchdown pass gave Chaffey a 35-28 lead twelve seconds into the fourth quarter.

But the Marauders and Dison answered quickly, re-taking the lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Sharp with 12:03 left that capped a 9-play drive. Then the AVC defense stepped up, forcing a Chaffey punt after Edwin Delva sacked Stewart at the Panther 1 yard-line. Sharp returned the ensuing punt to the Chaffey 23, and three plays later Aubrey Dixon scored on a 15-yard run to give AVC a 41-35. A 29-yard field goal by Keoki Kaiahua clinched the win for AVC, making it 44-35 with 3:34 left.

All that came after Chaffey rallied from a pair of two-touchdown deficits to take its lead early in the fourth quarter. Antelope Valley led, 13-0, midway through the first quarter and 28-14 late in the second quarter before Chaffey scored three consecutive touchdowns to take a 7-point lead on Jefferies' fourth touchdown catch of the game early in the fourth quarter.

Antelope Valley scored the game's first touchdown on a 22-yard pass from Dison to Zikerious Ware with 6:40 left in the first quarter. Chaffey's Tavea Cobb appeared to block Kaiahua's extra point try, keeping the score 6-0, but AVC got a huge break on the ensuing kickoff when Will Hawkins' pooch kick settled around the Chaffey 18 and Kris O'Neal recovered for the Marauders. On the next play Dison threw a touchdown pass to Mike Williams to make it 13-0.

And when Chaffey got the ball back, running back Jaymie Snowden was thrown for a 12-yard loss on the next play. But then Stewart threw his first touchdown pass of the game, a 90-yard toss to Jefferies, who had gotten behind the AVC defense. That quickly turned the momentum in Chaffey's favor as the Panthers cut the deficit to 13-7.

Chaffey took a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter when backup quarterback Dominick Barnett threw a 57-yard pass to Kendrick Gaines down the left sideline to the AVC 1 and moments later threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jefferies. Erik Zamudio's extra point made it 14-13 with 9:44 left in the first half.

But Antelope Valley scored the game's next two touchdowns to take a lead. Dison threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Anderson III to put the Marauders back in front, and got the two-point conversion with a shovel pass to Ware on the conversion attempt to make it 21-14. Then Brian Luttrell pushed the lead to 28-14 when he intercepted a Stewart pass at midfield and took it all the way into the end zone for the score with 3:39 left in the half.

Chaffey crept back within a touchdown when Stewart converted a 4th down play by throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Taylor with 2:08 left in the first half. Then the Panthers tied it when Stewart threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jefferies just 4:17 into the third quarter to make it 28-28. Neither team scored again until Stewart's fourth TD pass, the 16-yard toss to Jefferies early in the fourth quarter, that gave Chaffey its short-lived 35-28 lead.

For Antelope Valley, Dison finished 17 of 29 passing for 199 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He also rushed 13 times for 51 yards. Jhaston Faggans led all rushers with 92 yards on 13 carries. AVC totaled 280 yards on the ground for the night. Anderson led AVC receivers with 4 catches for 56 yards.

For Chaffey, Stewart went 17 for 33 for 357 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Barnett was 3 for 6 for 70 yards and a TD, pushing Chaffey's passing totals to 427 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jefferies had 7 catches for 218 yards and 4 TDs. But Chaffey managed just 22 yards on the ground on 27 carries, which led to AVC's advantage in time of possession of nearly 12 minutes.
