Jones County blasts Hinds

RAYMOND – The 19th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats forced five turnovers in the first half and rolled to a 50-15 victory over Hinds Community College here Thursday night at Renfroe Stadium.

The Bobcats improve to 5-2 overall, 4-1 in the MACJC South Division. Hinds falls to 3-4 and 1-4.

JCJC quarterback Ethan Hamilton passed for 145 yards and a score and rushed for another 44 yards. Kalif Koen carried six times for 123 yards, including a 96-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He also had an 8-yard scoring run. Rueben Ducksworth rushed 15 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns.

JaMichael Willis had a 17-yard pass reception and Grant McLaurin had a 44-yard field goal.

Defensively, Corey Trim had a 49-yard pass interception for a touchdown and Felton Collins recovered a pair of fumbles.

JCJC had 452 yards of total offense on the night, compared to 292 yards for the Eagles. The Bobcats piled up a whopping 307 yards on the ground.

The Bobcats will host Southwest Mississippi at 3 p.m. on Oct. 20 in their final home regular season game. The game will be televised live on with Mark Easley and Ed Smith on the call. Airtime is 2:45 p.m.

Currently in the division, Co-Lin is 3-0, while Mississippi Gulf Coast is 2-1. The Wolves travel to Pearl River on Saturday, while the Bulldogs visit Southwest. The top two teams in the division qualify for the playoffs.

The tone for Thursday's game was set on the first play from scrimmage.

The Eagles had the ball on their own 24-yard line. The ball was snapped from center before quarterback Anthony D'Angelo was ready and hit him in the leg. Collins pounced on it for the Bobcats at the Hinds' 17.

Three plays later, Hamilton connected with Willis over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown pass. McLaurin's extra point made it 7-0 with 13:59 left.

The Bobcats took over on their own 18 on their next possession. This time, the ball was snapped over Hamilton's head into the end zone, where he recovered it and was tackled for a safety. That made it 7-2 with 12:23 showing.

On JCJC's next possession, the Eagles blocked a McLaurin punt and took over on the JCJC 14. On the next play from scrimmage, Hinds' Quadarias Mireles carried the ball down to the Bobcat 5, but fumbled and JCJC recovered.

On Hinds' next possession, Pate Demuth punted 52 yards and the ball was downed on the JCJC 1.

After Ducksworth gained three yards on first down, the Bobcats handed the ball to Koen. The Foley, Ala., freshman would break at least four tackles on the play and scamper 96 yards for a touchdown. McLaurin's PAT made it 14-2 with 3:38 left in the first quarter.

On the Eagles' next possession, D'Angelo attempted a pass from his own 41. It was tipped, Trim came up with the interception at the Hinds' 49 and returned it all the way for a score. McLaurin's kick made it 21-2 with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

The JCJC defense would come through again on Hinds' next possession.

Eagle running back Darryan Ragsdale would gain 12 yards on a run, but he fumbled and Collins recovered at the Hinds' 47.

Four plays later, Ducksworth scored on an 8-yard run on the last play of the first quarter. The extra point was no good, but Jones led 27-2 after the first quarter.

The Eagles would get their only touchdown of the night on their next possession as they drove 75 yards in 12 plays. D'Angelo connected with Quantavius Leslie from 5 yards out for the score. Tyler Poe's extra point made it 27-9 with 9:29 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats would take the ensuing kickoff and drive from their 28 to their own 46. Hamilton would then throw deep, but Hinds' Kenya Dennis came up with the interception at his own 11.

On the very next play, D'Angelo fumbled the ball as he attempted to pass and JCJC's Marion Chapman recovered at the Eagle 7.

Two plays later, Ducksworth scored on a 4-yard run. McLaurin's extra point made it 34-9 with 6:24 left in the first half.

Hinds then put together a drive from their own 25 to the Bobcat 12 in 15 plays. But Poe's 29-yard field goal attempt was off to the right.

Poe would convert a 32-yard field goal to cap a 43-yard, seven-play drive on Hinds' first possession of the second half. That made it 34-12 with 9:57 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats would then drive 90 yards in just eight plays for a score. A 23-yard pass from Hamilton to Bossier and a 30-yard Ducksworth run were key plays in the drive. Ducksworth would score from a yard out. The extra point was no good, but JCJC led 40-12 with 7:03 left in the third quarter.

On Jones' next possession, they would drive 49 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Koen would get his second score of the evening on an 8-yard run. McLaurin's PAT made it 47-12 with 2:21 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats got their final points on their next drive when they drove from their own 40 to the Eagle 27 in nine plays. The drive stalled and McLaurin's 44-yard field goal made it 50-12 with 12:51 left in the game.

Hinds closed the scoring when Poe booted a 45-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in the game.

Ragsdale led the Eagles with 81 yards on 10 carries.

Hinds travels to Holmes next Thursday.
