The Northwest Mississippi Rangers are ranked #2 in the NJCAA Pre-Season Top 25. This write up from NW Miss. SID, Brett Brown, previews the team and also looks back at 2000.


Ranger Head Coach Bobby Franklin is entering his 21st as head coach at Northwest carrying with him a career record of 174-45-6, including 20 straight winning seasons. Under Franklin, the Rangers are 89-21-2 at home.

Northwest was ranked pre-season #1 in the nation by the NJCAA, but were placed on probation for violating the starting practice date for the beginning of fall drills. The Rangers were stripped of their national ranking and banned from post-season play. Northwest vented its frustration on all 10 of its opponents by setting a national record with 559 points. The Rangers finished 10-0 and were only one of two undefeated teams in the country.

The Rangers, ranked #2 in the NJCAA Pre-Season Top 25, begin the 2001 campaign riding a 20-game win streak that dates back to week two of the 1999 season. During the streak, Northwest has scored 30 or more points in every contest, and have won those contests by an average score of 50.7 to 11.8. The Rangers have also won 19 consecutive games against opponents from the MACJC North division. Northwest has outscored those 19 division opponents by an average score of 48.7 to 13.2.
