Shead talks about decision to join SMU

One of the top JUCO running backs in the country, Navarro RB Traylon Shead (6-2, 225) opted to sign with SMU last week and will enroll there in a couple of weeks. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented tailback and he filled us in on why he chose the Mustangs...

"They were recruiting me hard all season and then they came down for our game against Blinn," Shead said. "I got an offer from them and committed pretty quickly after that.

"They run the spread there, so, as a running back, you have to choose your spots, but when you get your chance, you gotta take it and that's something I've been able to do ever since high school."

After high school, Shead, a record-setting runner from a small school, chose to sign with Texas, but things just didn't work out.

"I loved my time there at Texas, but I needed to get a fresh start," Shead told JCFootball.com back in the summer. "The coaches and players there, I miss all of them, but I had to do what was right for me.

"I wanted to play running back and I just didn't feel like I was going to get that chance there, so I left and found a place here at Navarro.

"They have a great program here and a great tradition. They get a lot of guys ready for the next level and moved on, so I figured if I came here and had a great season that I would get another chance to play D-1 ball."

In addition to his offer from SMU, Shead also was getting attention from schools in the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten.

"SMU was just the best opportunity for me," Shead said. "I liked the coaches and their offense. It was just right."

Shead will enroll at SMU on January 8th and he will have two years to play two once he steps on the field.
