Tolbert is ready to build on big 2012 season

After a solid freshman campaign, Ellsworth WR J.T. Tolbert (6-0, 170) hopes a productive offseason results in four-year schools extending offers his way. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented wideout recently and up talked about his performance this past fall and what he'll be focusing on this offseason...

"I felt pretty good about what I was able to do, but you always feel like there are things you could have done better," Tolbert told JCFootball.com. "This winter and spring and summer, I'm going to live in the weight room. I need to get bigger and stronger so that I can be more physical down the field."

Even with his lack of bulk, Tolbert still managed to post 51 receptions for 753 yards and seven touchdowns, leading the Panthers in all three categories while helping them post a 7-4 record including a 30-27 win over Louisburg in the Graphic Edge Bowl.

"I feel like I can run any route my team needs from me," Tolbert noted. "One thing that adding more size and strength will help me is in the air. Jump balls were something that I didn't do as well with as I think I can."

After a solid prep career at Norcross (Ga.) High School, Tolbert committed to Valdosta State, but was unable to qualify, so he decided to get away from all of the distractions and head to Ellsworth.

"This place has been great for me," Tolbert said. "I've had a lot of fun, I've gotten my grades where they need to be and I believe this place is getting me ready to be successful at the next level."

On the recruiting front, no schools have come his way at this point, but he said he hopes that will change once coaches get a look at what he can do and see how he's improved this spring that offers will start to flow.

"Most of the guys who have been through this before said I need to just work hard and the offers will probably come in the summer, so I need to be patient," Tolbert said. "That's why I'm just going to take care of my stuff, what I can control and keep up with my classes and then schools will start to take notice of me."

Tolbert is on pace to be a mid-year signee (December 2013) and will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
