Lackawanna LB prospect has foreign flavor

A player who hasn't been on many recruiting lists this season, but now has seen several offers come in from FBS programs is Lackawanna LB Bastian Neuger (6-1, 232). He struggled some this season with injuries, but with his combination of size, speed and athleticism, he's a player several schools have said they would love to take a chance on...

"Right now I have offers from Wyoming, San Jose State, BYU and SMU and I've been talking a lot with Washington State and Colorado State and Virginia Tech just called me yesterday, so it's been picking up," Neuger told JCFootball.com. "I was supposed to visit Washington State this weekend, but it didn't work out, so I'm just seeing what happens.

"I know Moritz Christ from Washington State because he was in Germany and played there when I was there, so he's my connection there."

While growing up in Munich, Germany, Neuger started playing American football as a 15 year old, playing for four years in Junior Football and then from the ages of 19 to 21 in Senior Football.

"Over there, you don't play American football for a school, you have to play for a club and you can only do that in Junior Football which is for 15 to 19 years olds," Neuger said. "When I was playing Junior Football, I was a defensive end and linebacker and then in Senior Football, I played as an outside linebacker and that's what I played here at Lackawanna."

Neuger is a very good student, but because of the differences in classes, trying to transfer credits from Germany to the U.S. wasn't that easy.

"Some of my classes didn't count and the NCAA wouldn't accept them, so I came here late and have been studying," Neuger said. "I played in five games, but I missed our last two with an injury that is all better now."

Neuger is on pace to qualify this spring, when classes finish up in May, and if he signs with a school he would have four years to play three and that is what has made him such an intriguing prospect.

We will continue to keep track of Neuger's progress over the next month or so as he gets ready to take official visits after the quiet period is over and we will have more from him in the near future.
