Fullerton's Lewis talks about his decision

This time of year, things are still going on with a lot of JUCO prospects and one player who recently saw things pick up is Fullerton DT Melvin Jenkins (6-4, 295). The big, powerful lineman picked up offers from four FBS programs and made his decision to join the school which will give him the opportunity to face SEC talent every week...

"I committed to Kentucky," a happy Lewis told JCFootball.com Sunday afternoon. "I had offers from them, Miami, Hawaii and Washington and a few other schools were calling too.

"(Kentucky) is an up and coming program. They play against the best best competition week in and week out. I look forward to that over the next couple of years."

As a sophomore this past season, Lewis, playing primarily three three-technique defensive tackle spot, totaled 41 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 12 tackles-for-loss.

"I think what I am best at is stopping the run, but I'm also pretty vocal too," Lewis said. "I have been working a lot on my strength and my speed since I got here and I'm still working on that because in the SEC you gotta be a great athlete and be big and quick to play D-line."

Lewis prepped at Compton (Ca.) High School and enjoyed a solid career there, but even though he got a lot of attention from recruiters he didn't have the grades to garner offers.

"I had to make a decision and after I visited Fullerton, I knew it was the right place because the coaches are great and they have a great reputation for getting guys out to D-1 schools," Lewis said.

He is on pace to graduate in May and he will have three years to play two when he enrolls at Kentucky this summer.
