Blue is a talented JUCO safety prospect

One of the top returning tacklers in the JUCO ranks this year will be New Mexico Military S Desmond Blue (5-11, 200). While he isn't a big hitter, what he is is a sure tackler that has the football smarts to be in the right place at the right time. JCFootball.com spoke to him recently and we got an update on what has been happening so far this offseason...

Blue prepped at Bradenton (Fl.) Southeast High School and was a standout there, but he was unable to qualify, so he decided to head to a JUCO program that he felt would help him get his academics in order and while still preparing him ready to play football at a four-year school.

"I actually enrolled at Fort Scott for about a week, but I just didn't like it there and I started to hear about (New Mexico Military) and what it was all about so I looked into it more and I liked it," Blue told JCFootball.com. "It's a really good place to help you get disciplined, the academics are good and I really like the fact that we play against some really talented guys every week."

As a freshman playing safety this past season, Blue led the Broncos with 85 tackles and tied for the team lead with two interceptions.

"I find the ball and I read plays well," Blue said. "I am good in coverage and I'm a sure-tackler, but I'm not really a big-hitter. Most of all, I just go out and make plays and do what I can to help my team win."

While he's solid in almost every aspect of his game, he's still been working hard this offseason to improve.

"I've been working on my hands a lot just so I can be a better, more physical tackler," Blue said. "I've also been working on my coverage skills, just getting quicker and making plays, too."

Recruiting has yet to really get underway for Blue, but he has spoken to one school.

"New Mexico State has been talking to me a little bit, but other than them, I really haven't heard much," Blue noted. "It's still early on in the process, so I'm not really too worried about it right now. I just need to go out and take care of my business and do what I can to get ready for the season and hopefully somebody sees what I can do and likes what they see."

Blue is on pace to graduate in May of 2014 and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
