Mathis is ready to step up

After a solid freshman season in 2012, L.A. Pierce RB Josh Mathis (5-7, 170) hopes to prove to everyone he can carry the load at the four-year level. spoke to the shifty runner recently and he updated us on things...

Mathis prepped at West Philadelphia (Pa.) Catholic and was unable to qualify, so he decided to head west to continue his football career.

"I didn't really know anyone out here, but Pierce has a lot of guys from my area and I just decided to make the move and I'm really happy that I did it," Mathis admitted recently.

As a freshman this past season, Mathis had to split carries behind two more experienced tailbacks, but he still managed to rush for 247 yards on 61 carries with a touchdown and he also hauled in 10 receptions for 114 yards and another score as well.

"I can run inside or outside. I can do whatever my coaches need me to do," Mathis noted. "I'm working on my strength and my power right now. It feels like I'm working out seven days a week and I feel great right now."

On the recruiting front, only two schools have been in contact with him at this point, but more should come calling once the spring evaluation period really gets underway.

"South Alabama and Kansas are the two schools I've talked to, but more will come in and see us during our spring practices," Mathis said. "I'm patient, so I'll just keep working, getting ready for my season and then I'll see where I stand with things."

Mathis is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 season.
