San Diego Mesa safety is one to watch in '13

San Diego Mesa S Josh Sakover (5-10, 180) might not be the biggest prospect physically, but he's definitely shown the ability to find the ball and make plays. After a solid freshman season for the Olympians, the talented safety is expected to be a hot commodity this fall...

Sakover went to Point Loma (San Diego, Ca.) High School and enjoyed a solid prep career there, but he was unable to qualify for a scholarship to a D-1 school so he decided to enroll at Mesa.

"My high school head coach knew the coaches here at Mesa and he said it was the right place and I've really liked it," Sakover told JCFootball.com recently. "It's close to home and we play a lot of talented teams so it definitely is a challenge and it makes you better."

As a freshman last season, Sakover started every game at free safety and finished second on the team with 55 tackles to go along with three interceptions and seven passes defensed. He earned Freshamn Defensive MVP and All-Conference honors as well.

"I'm good in coverage. That's what I do best and I'm a good open-field tackler," Sakover noted. "This offseason I've been working on my explosion and being faster to the ball. I already have pretty good speed, but I want to get faster and be quicker and also get some weight on me."

Recruiting has yet to take off for Sakover, but he has heard from Utah, although at this point it's just a letter.

Sakover is working hard to finish up his coursework so that he can sign with a school in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
