Smith is a playmaker for Hartnell

After a solid freshman campaign in 2012, Hartnell WR Da'Quan Smith (6-1, 196) hopes to start hearing from four-year schools very soon. spoke with the talented receiver recently and he updated us on his offseason so far...

Smith graduated from Baltimore (Md.) Cardinal Gibbons High School back in 2012 and was unable to qualify for a scholarship so some friends suggested that he head west to continue his football career.

"I already had a couple of friends out here at Hartnell and they said things were going well for them out here and that lots of schools were coming to see them, so I decided to come out and see what I could do," Smith told

All Smith did last season was go out and lead Hartnell in receptions with 28 and touchdowns with four while finishing second in receiving yards with 412 from his slot receiver position.

"I got up and get the ball really well and I've got strong hands, so that helps me a lot," Smith said. "Last year was my first ever playing wide receiver, I was always at quarterback or running back before, so this offseason I've been working really hard on my route-running and being more explosive into and out of my breaks."

On the recruiting front, things have yet to take off for Smith, but he hopes that is only a matter of time.

"The coaches said a lot of schools will be by to see us during the spring and that will hopefully be when I start hearing from some schools," Smith said. "I've just got to keep working hard and make sure I'm taking care of my business and hopefully things will work out."

Smith is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
