Meza talks kicking, recruiting

After a solid sophomore season with Pasadena last fall, P Manuel Meza (5-10, 198) has set himself up to be considered one of, if not the top JUCO punters in the country this fall. He recently received his first offer and more schools could throw their hats in the ring in the near future...

"I got my first offer, from East Carolina," Meza told JCFootball.com. "My coaches have been talking to them and they called me and said that ECU was offering me."

In addition to his offer from the Pirates, Meza is also hearing from Wisconsin and there are several other schools that have stopped by Pasadena and could also get involved.

After a solid prep career at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs, California, Meza walked on with Oregon with the hope of earning a scholarship, but things didn't pan out.

"I went there hoping to get a spot and earn a scholarship, but it didn't work out, I didn't make it, so I decided to start fresh and come here to Pasadena," Meza said. "The staff here is great and I liked where the program was headed and I felt like if I did well, I could definitely get a chance at a scholarship to a different school."

As a freshman last season for the Lancers, Meza averaged 38.5 yards per punt with a long of 64 while dropping eight inside the 20.

This offseason, Meza has been a standout at Chris Sailer's camps and while he can kickoff and place kick in a pinch, he knows where his bread is buttered.

"I can do both (kickoff and place kick), but I'm at my best punting," Meza said. "Coach Sailer is great and he said he felt that was where I was at my best and that it's where I can make a name for myself."

As far as making a decision, Meza isn't in a hurry and said he plans to allow the process to play out.

"I'm planning to take my time," Meza said. "I just want to get the full picture of things and I'd like to take a couple of visits before I decide."

Meza will have his AA this summer and plans to play for Pasadena this fall and then sign with a school. He will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
