Kanteman joins Illinois' 2013 class

L.A. Pierce TE Trevor Kanteman (6-4, 238) hasn't even played a down of football in junior college, but when Illinois came out to watch he and his teammates practice, they decided they'd seen enough and offered the talented prospect and he committed on the spot...

Kanteman was a solid prospect heading into his senior season, but when he blew out the ACL in his left knee only five games into his senior season, no schools decided to offer him and he instead hoped to walk-on at UCLA.

"I was planning to walk-on, but I didn't make it in and I started to think about it and I wanted to be a scholarship guy," Kanteman told JCFootball.com. "I sat out the 2012 season and rehabbed and then I talked to Nick Arbuckle, our quarterback here at Pierce, and he encouraged me to come out and play, so I enrolled."

Now back to 100%, Kanteman spent one week working out with his team and when Illinois dropped by and got a look at what he could do, things progressed quickly.

"Their wide receivers coach (Mike Bellamy) was out at practice yesterday and said he liked me and then today their tight ends coach (Alex Golesh) called and said they wanted to offer me and they wanted me to come be part of their team this fall," Kanteman said. "I committed right there. I'm a five to play four guy, so I just wanted to get it started right away and the Pierce coaches were really supportive of my decision."

Kanteman hopes to enroll on June 9th for the start of summer classes, but he will take his official visit to Champaign (Il.) next week and will have their academic people go over his transcripts.

"I'll head out there mid-week and meet with them and they will tell me if I can be there in June or if I have to wait until August for the start of fall camp," Kanteman said. "Either way, I'm going to be playing for Illinois next year and I'm really excited about it."
