2001 ICCAC Team Previews

A 2001 ICCAC football preview. Team by team capsules for Ellsworth, NDSCS, Iowa Central, North Iowa Area, and Waldorf.



2000: 5-5 Overall; 4-4 ICCAC (T-2nd)

COACH: Chad Haynes-At Ellsworth CC, 5-5, 2 years

RETURNING STARTERS: 9; 5 Offense, 4 Defense

RETURNING PLAYERS ON OFFENSE: The Panthers return 5 starters on offense in 2001 that includes sophomore wide receivers Clinton Crump, Thomas Bennett and Charles Clark. Sophomore Rian Thompson is back after leading the conference in rushing (750 yards) a year ago and will direct the ground attack with sophomore LaTorence Williams anchoring the line.

RETURNING PLAYERS ON DEFENSE: Coach Haynes's defense is lead by Linebacker Jonathan Harrell, a 2000 First Team All – Region selection. Harrell was tied for first in the conference in tackles a season ago and will be accompanied on the line by All – Region Honorable Mention selection Tommie Powell and defensive backs Jahmar Jenkins and Jeff Douglas.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: WR Clinton Crump, LB Jonathan Harrell, DL Tommie Powell

OVERVIEW: Coach Haynes is back for this second year at the helm and will field a fairly young, but talent team. Look for guys like Thompson and Harrell to step up on both sides of the ball for the Panthers.




2000: 9-2 Overall; 8-0 ICCAC (1st)

COACH: Dick Ramsey-At North Iowa Area CC, 94-53-1, 15 years

RETURNING STARTERS: 8; 2 Offense, 6 Defense

RETURNING PLAYERS ON OFFENSE: North Iowa Area CC has two returning starters on the offensive side of the ball. Linemen Chris Newby, All – Region Honorable Mention last season, will secure the offensive line with wide out Joe Price back for another year. The Trojans will have to replace four First Team All – Region selections that include Indiana State recruit Damien Cunningham.

RETURNING PLAYERS ON DEFENSE: The Trojans will return six players on defense including 2000 First Team All – Region selections James Hanson and Mark Tetzel along with three All – Region Honorable Mention choices Dan Miller, Brad Boldt and Mike Tetzel. The key to Coach Ramsey's defensive will be the 12 returning lettermen from last season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: OL Chris Newby, DL Dan Miller, DB James Hanson

OVERVIEW: Under the direction of 15th year head coach Dick Ramsey, NIACC has completed their 12th winning season. The 2000 Trojans placed 1st in the conference with a perfect 8-0 record, but suffered a heart-breaking 23-20 loss to the Rochester (Minn.) Yellow jackets in the Pepsi Cola/Sigler Printing Bowl. North Iowa Area CC finished the season ranked #8 in the nation.



2000: 0-11 Overall; 0-8 ICCAC (5th)

COACH: Kevin Twait-At Iowa Central CC, 28-24, 5 years

RETURNING STARTERS: 13; 5 Offense, 8 Defense

RETURNING PLAYERS ON OFFENSE:  The key on offense will be to replace the big shoes left by Indiana State quarterback Julian Reese. Reese was second in the conference in both total offense and passing yards last season. Sophomore linemen Collin Menard will secure Coach Twait's offense this year. The West Des Moines Valley product was an All – Region Honorable Mention pick last fall. He is joined on the front line by sophomore Amos Tecklenburg. The Tritons will also return a pair of sophomore wide receivers, Andy Buck and Zach Dietz.

RETURNING PLAYERS ON DEFENSE:  Iowa Central CC returns eight starters on defense this fall lead by defensive back Donnell Boyer. Boyer, an All – Region Honorable Mention selection, lead the conference in interceptions picking off four last season. He is accompanied on defense by backs Jermaine Clements, Mike Douglas, Chad Dreckman and Marlon Brewer. The line will include Nick Steinbach and Caleb Van Cleave and linebacker Ryan Swanson.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: OL Collin Menard and DB Donnell Boyer

OVERVIEW: Finding a quarterback to move the ball well will be a question that we have to be answered in the pre-season along with being better on defensive against the run. The Tritons will also have to replace kicker Clay Leonard and punter Grant Fineran. Leonard was third in the conference in kicking and Fineran lead with conference in punting as well as being named to the All – Region Honorable Mention team.



2000: 4-5 Overall, 4-4 ICCAC (4th)

COACH: Dr. John Richman-At North Dakota State College of Science, 82-59, 15 years

RETURNING STARTERS: 5; 3 Offense, 2 Defense

RETURNING PLAYERS ON OFFENSE:  Dr. Richman only returns three starters on offense this fall and they are all linemen. Sophomores Yatarrie Brown, Mario Foster and All – Region Honorable Mention selection Tony Fugleberg will be the nucleus to this year's offensive. They will need to find replacements for wide receiver Reid Seitz and tight end Matt Ruckheim, both of who were First Team All –Region selections last year along with All – Region Honorable Mention quarterback Tyler Stoeser and running back Matt Fromelt.

RETURNING PLAYERS ON DEFENSE: All – Region Honorable Mention selection Nick Sturdivan will anchor the defense this year along with sophomore linebacker Dan Spindler. Sophomore defensive backs Bobby Carlson, Larry Stewart and Brandon Pinderhughes along with freshmen defensive tackle Tom Stanger all should be key factors in the Wildcat Defense.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Terrance Freeney, DB's Bobby Carlson, Larry Stewart and Brandon Pinderhughes, LB Tom Stanger

OVERVIEW: The Wildcats are 14-5 over the past two seasons-best in the conference and after a disappointing season last year, the Wildcats will attempt to climb back to the top of the conference.

COACH: Dave Bolstorff-At Waldorf College, 179-130-2, 36 years

RETURNING STARTERS: 12; 7 Offense, 5 Defense

RETURNING PLAYERS ON OFFENSE:  The Warriors return seven offensive starters from one season ago that include three interior linemen, a skilled receiving core along with quarterbacks Ryan McCarville and Kyle Nordeen make for a high quality offense.

RETURNING PLAYERS ON DEFENSE:  Coach Bolstoff's defense will have five players back which include linebackers Adam Volek and Trent Steinhart with backs Chris Smitz and Chris Patterson back for another season along with defensive end Danny Moulds.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB's Ryan McCarville and Kyle Nordeen, RB J.C. Ruddy and DE Danny Moulds

OVERVIEW: Coach Bolstorff is entering his 36th year at the helm of the Warriors program. The Warriors will have to replace five First Team All – Region selections from a year ago including kicker Dan Smith, who lead the conference in kicking one year ago.
