Smothers talks recruiting

Scottsdale LB Antonio Smothers (6-2, 240) is an impressive looking athlete and since the end of the 2012 football season, schools have been clamoring to get into his good graces with offers and continued contact. caught up with the highly sought-after prospect and he updated us on where things stand and a timeline for possibly making a decision...

"Things have been going good," Smothers told over the weekend. "I've been working hard with my team and recruiting is going really well for me.

"I have offers from Kansas State, Cincinnati, Miami, Memphis and Arizona and USC and Oregon State have both been by my school and they are recruiting me really hard right now, so they might be offering soon too."

While playing the strongside linebacker spot for Scottsdale last fall, Smothers totaled 53 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack and he said he expects to have an even bigger impact for the Artichokes this coming fall.

"I'm an all-around player, but I'm probably at my best in coverage," Smothers said. "I just feel really comfortable in space and covering backs or tight ends or even wide receivers. I've been working a lot on my footwork and just making sure my technique is as clean as possible so that I don't take any false steps or stuff like that. I'm really good against the run too, but I wanted to get even better at it."

As far as when he wants to make a decision, Smothers said he plans to take all of his visits and his decision will come later in the process.

"I'm thinking about taking one of my officials this summer. It will probably be to Miami because they are the one school that is talking about doing that, but I'm not sure on if that will happen or not," Smothers said. "I want to take all of my visits and then make my commitment to whichever school I want to play for and then I'll sign (on December 18th) in the mid-year signing period."

Smothers hails from Gary, Indiana and redshirted at Arizona Western in 2011 before transferring to Scottsdale and playing there in 2012. He will have two years to play two following the 2013 football season.
