Green's versatility is intriguing

His teammate (Derrick Moncrief) has received most of the early recruiting hype, but make no mistake, Mississippi Gulf Coast S Nigel Green (6-0, 185) is a rising star and has started to see his recruiting pick up. He's now up to three offers and more could be on the way for the versatile defensive back...

"Right now my offers are from Northwestern State, South Alabama and Louisiana Lafayette," Green told JCFootball.com. "I've also been getting looks from Auburn, Ole Miss and South Florida and a bunch of other schools have been sending letters, so things are picking up."

As a freshman in 2012, while playing both nickel corner and safety, Green posted 42 tackles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed, showing both his versatility, his ball-hawking ability and tackling skills.

"I played mainly nickel, but then I moved to "dawg" which is the safety down in the box," Green said. "This spring though, I moved to free safety and Derrick Moncrief will play more in the box this year so I'll be more of a center field guy and that will let me use my ball-hawking skills."

As a prep, Green enjoyed a solid career at Northwest Rankin (Flowood, Ms.) High School, but when schools pulled back on his offers he decided to join Mississippi Gulf Coast to put himself in a better position to succeed.

"Most of the schools that offered me pulled their offers because they didn't think I was going to qualify and then I did really well and thought I was going to qualify, but I didn't go through the NCAA Clearinghouse, so I don't even know if I was a qualifier or not," Green said. "Gulf Coast was just my best option. They have a great program here and I knew if I did well here, I would get looks and hopefully offers."

Green is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
