First offer in the books for Pierson

This offseason has been a test in patience for Pasadena DE Dale Pierson (6-3, 260). After a solid freshman season, he has had plenty of schools eyeing his talents, but until recently none had extended an offer. However, that all changed on Friday when Arizona became of the first of what promises to be several schools to offer the talented prospect...

"Arizona offered me today while I was on an unofficial visit," Pierson told "I had been talkin to them for about a month or maybe a little longer and they said they really wanted to get me out to see the school and check things out.

"My brother and I decided to come out and while I was meeting with the coaches, they offered."

Head coach Rich Rodriguez was not present, but he gave the approval for the offer to be extended.

"Coach Rodriguez had a previous engagement, so he wasn't there, but he gave the (assistant) coaches the blessing to offer me," Pierson said. "They like me as a five-technique (3-4 defensive end) because of my size and my athleticism. They think I could fit in well with their scheme."

In addition to the Wildcats, Pierson has been talking to several schools and said that a trio of schools seem to be close to offering as well.

"I'd say, the top four schools recruiting me are Arizona obviously, UCLA, Utah and Michigan State," Pierson said. "The other three haven't offered yet obviously, but they seem the closest offering and they are the ones recruiting me the hardest right now."

Besides those four programs, Pierson has also been hearing from schools like Colorado, New Mexico, North Carolina, Southern Miss, Illinois, Fresno State and Kansas State

As freshman this past season, Pierson posted 64 tackles and 6.5 sacks for the Lancers, leading them in both categories.

He is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
