Brummel is ready to show what he can do

One of the top JUCO tight ends in the nation, at least from an athletic standpoint, is Butte's Bo Brummel (6-4, 230). In addition to his efforts on the gridiron, this offseason he's been hitting the books and he's ready to show the recruiting world he can get it done on the field as well as in the classroom...

Brummel prepped at Arlington (Wa.) High School and had a solid career there, however, his grades made it so that he was unable to qualify for a scholarship, so he headed to Butte to get his schoolwork in order and to play at the highest level possible.

"It's a great school and I liked the offense here a lot," Brummel told JCFootball.com. "They don't just ask you to catch, you also have to block and do it well, so I'm learning how to be a complete tight end."

As a freshman, Brummel didn't put up huge numbers, totaling just eight receptions for 122 yards and two scores, but his offensive coordinator, Robbie Snelling, feels that could change this fall.

"(Brummel) is a special, special talent and we underutilized him last year because we had (Texas-bound) Geoff Swaim and he was such a complete tight end too," Snelling said. "This year we'll do a lot more with him and try to use his speed and hands and athleticism. He's improving as a blocker too, so he isn't a liability there at all."

On the recruiting front, schools are waiting to see how his academics come along (after spring quarter he had a 2.1, but he's been taking summer classes and reports are he's doing well) and they also want to get a look at what he can do in the offense this fall.

"Right now, the schools I've been talking with are Illinois, Middle Tennessee and Marshall and Arizona talked to me when they came out to practice last month," Brummel said. "I've talked to a few other schools and met the coaches when they were hear for spring ball, but those four are the ones that I feel really like me right now."

Brummel is on pace to graduate in May and he will have three years to play two following the 2013 football season.
