Campbell makes his choice

One of the top remaining defensive line prospects still looking for a home this fall was former East L.A. DT Demetrius Campbell (6-3, 290). Today, via twitter, the talented and versatile lineman announced he will enroll at Texas Tech next week...

"Things picked up with Texas Tech back in May when coach (Matt) Wallerstedt talked to me and said they had a spot opening up since Delvon Simmons was transferring and they needed someone for this fall," Campbell told "I was getting a lot of offers, from mainly mid-major type schools, and I was going to wait things out and just see how it kinda went, but then I started thinking that I just wanted to be part of what they were doing there and there was a great chance to get some playing time right away."

Campbell had hoped to sign with a school back in February, but due to some transcript and class issues, some schools pulled back and took a "wait and see" approach with him.

"I had a couple of schools interested, but some of my classes didn't transfer and that just made it hard, so they said they had to move on," Campbell noted. "But things worked out and I'm going to be a Red Raider and I'm really excited to enroll there next Thursday (August 1st)."

As a prep in Florida, Campbell was a highly recruited prospect and had committed to sign with West Virginia, but was unable to qualify, so he headed west to keep playing ball and wound up at College of the Canyons before transferring to East Los Angeles shortly before the start of the 2012 season.

Last season, as a sophomore starter who played both defensive end and defensive tackle, the 6'4", 290-pounder totaled 45 tackles, 15 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

"(Texas Tech) plays a 3-4, so they want to move me around and use me at nose tackle and then move me out to end at different times and in different situations," Campbell said.

As noted, he will enroll at Texas Tech next week and he will have three years to play two once he steps on campus.
