NJCAA Football Week 3 Preview

With only one game on the Week 3 schedule featuring two unbeaten NJCAA teams, coaches across the nation will try to keep their programs moving in a positive direction with a pivotal win.

NJCAA Game of the Week

#15 Itawamba (1-0) at Southwest Mississippi (1-0) - Thursday, 7:00 p.m. (CT)

One week into the MACJC schedule, No. 15 Itawamba and Southwest Mississippi will clash under the lights Thursday in a crucial matchup. Southwest Mississippi will look to keep the ball rolling after winning their first game since 2011 last week. Aiming for their first MACJC playoffs appearance since 2007, the Itawamba Indians are eager to earn a road win this week against the cross-division Bears.

Under new leadership, Southwest Mississippi is 1-0 with head coach Tucker Peavey at the helm. Last week, the Bears ended their 11-game losing streak with a 19-15 victory over Northwest Mississippi. Led by 10 tackles from sophomore linebacker C.J. O'Quin, Southwest Mississippi held the Rangers offense scoreless in the final 40 minutes of play. Freshman running back Chris Jones led the Bears offensively, rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Missing the MACJC playoffs the past three seasons due to tie-breaking procedures, Itawamba is confident things will be different in 2013 with the return of sophomore quarterback Griff Loftis. Earning MACJC Offensive Player of the Week honors, Loftis opened the season with 343 yards passing and four touchdowns en route to a 40-7 win over East Central. On the ground, sophomore running back Tobias Lofton compiled 113 yards on 17 carries. The Indians defense held East Central to 2-of-20 passing and just 134 yards of total offense.

Other Key Games Across the Map

#12 Garden City (2-0) at #13 Hutchinson (1-1) – Saturday, 7:00 p.m. (CT)

No. 12 Garden City heads to No 13. Hutchinson Saturday for a critical game that could determine where both teams head from here. The Broncbusters are looking to take their program to the next step with freshman quarterback Akeem Jones who has thrown for 425 yards and five touchdowns this season. Following a devastating 41-16 loss to No. 3 Navarro, Hutchinson will look to rebound this week behind sophomore quarterback Luke Barnes.

#17 Tyler (1-0) at #18 Kilgore (0-1) – Saturday, 7:00 p.m. (CT)

In the Lone Star State, No. 17 Tyler takes their high-powered offense on the road to face the No. 18 Rangers of Kilgore. Following a shocking 27-16 defeat in their 2013 debut, Kilgore and sophomore quarterback Tanner Tausch will look to get back on track at home. In a season-opening 49-26 win over Fort Scott, Apaches sophomore quarterback Randy Price completed 11-of-20 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns.

#14 Snow (1-1) at Scottsdale (1-1) – Saturday, 7:00 p.m. (PT)

Following No. 2 Snow's upset loss and Scottsdale's upset victory, both squads enter Saturday's WSFL showdown in the desert with a lot on the line. After knocking off No. 11 Arizona Western 45-23, the Fighting Artichokes will again depend on sophomore quarterback Blake Decker who has completed 65-of-66 pass attempts this season. Suffering a 35-17 defeat at the hands of Georgia Military, the Snow Badgers will need to tighten up their run defense after giving up 389 yards on the ground to the Bulldogs.
