Freshman Duo Leads Canyons Past Bakersfield

The freshman quarterback tandem of Jake Dashnaw and Tony Dawson combined to complete 20 consecutive passes, their final 20 passes of the game, and finished a combined 21 of 24 passing for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns, and rushed for 81 yards without taking a sack to lead host Canyons to a 42-14 win over Bakersfield Saturday evening in Santa Clarita.

Dawson, the more mobile of the two signal-callers, was an astounding 8-for-8 passing for 93 yards with a pair of touchdowns, while also running for a game-high 66 yards on 10 carries. Dashnaw, the more traditional pocket passer, completed 13 of 16 passes for 105 yards and a score after completing just 1 of his first 4 attempts. Neither threw an interception or took a sack, and Canyons (4-1, 2-0) racked up 24 first downs on the night.

The first quarter was scoreless, and Bakersfield (1-4, 0-2) had the best chance to score first. Josh Hayley recovered a muffed punt for the Renegades at the Cougar 30 just over two minutes into the game. And Bakersfield drove all the way to the Cougar 1 yard-line. But on 1st and goal from the 1, Preston Hodges fumbled, and Alonte Riley recovered for Canyons, keeping the game scoreless.

Canyons got its chance to score early in the second quarter, just after Dawson entered the game. The Cougars drove to the Bakersfield 22 and sent kicker Eric Kreitz out to attempt a 39-yard field goal. But Bakersfield's Grant Campbell broke through the middle of the line and blocked the kick, keeping the game scoreless for the moment.

Seconds later, Canyons had a lead it would hold the rest of the game. Hodges took the handoff from Cruise Adams but fumbled, and Austin Murillo recovered for Canyons at the 16 and carried the ball across the goal line with 13:17 left in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.

After that, the Canyons offense dominated the game, scoring on long drives on each of its next five possessions that not only built a big lead but took most of the clock in doing so. Each of the five drives took at least three minutes off the clock. And the only time the Canyons offense failed to score the rest of the night was on the last drive when the Cougars allowed the clock to run out and end the game.

After a Bakersfield punt, Dawson directed a 10-play drive that included a spectacular diving catch by Kenny Feyh on a key 4th down play and ended with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Strange to make it 14-0. Bakersfield got a 50-yard return of the ensuing kickoff from Brock Martin, and scored a touchdown when Hodges partially atoned for his earlier fumbles by carrying the ball into the end zone from 6 yards out to make it 14-7 with 3:36 left in the first half.

But the Canyons offense kept rolling with the efficiency of a machine, driving 72 yards in 7 plays to take a 21-7 lead when Dawson threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Louis Gipson with 21 seconds left in the half. Dawson had the key play in the drive with a 25-yard run that got the ball to the Bakersfield 19 yard-line.

When the second half began, Canyons took the kickoff and drove for another score, using up more than six minutes in the process. With Dashnaw back under center, the Cougars plodded down the field, using 13 plays to cover 70 yards, with Matt Bowen scoring the touchdown on a 10-yard run with 8:58 left in the quarter.

Bakersfield answered with a strong drive of its own, reaching the Canyons 15 yard-line. But after a sack by Matt Freeman, a penalty for a false start and a sack by Driscoll Warner, the Renegades were pushed back to the 29, and on fourth down Adams' pass attempt fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.

And that was really Bakersfield's last chance to get back in the game. Dashnaw directed a 6-play, 71-yard drive that ended with him throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Travion Tucker to stretch the Canyons lead to 35-7. Then after a Bakersfield punt, Dawson returned to the field and directed a 13-play, 80-yard drive that chewed up more than six minutes. Da'John Gaines scored on a 2-yard run with 7:42 left to make it 42-7 and assure the Cougars of the win.

Bakersfield scored the game's last touchdown when Adams threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Brock Martin with 2:26 left, making it 42-14. But that only changed the score as the Cougars ran out the last two-plus minutes off the clock without even gaining a first down. Adams finished 11 of 21 passing for 137 yards on the night.
