Ruiz Is Focused On His Future

Heading into the season, College of the Sequoias DE Mason Ruiz (6-4, 267) was a player to keep an eye on. He had great size and the speed and athleticism to be a real force off the edge. Now that he's completed his sophomore campaign, the talented and versatile prospect is contemplating some offers and visits and he updated JCFootball.com recently on where things stand...

"I had a pretty good year, but we changed our scheme up to be a 3-4 so I was more of a guy that had to hold the edge and let the linebackers make their plays," Ruiz told JCFootball.com. "I'm not really built for that scheme, but I wanted to help my team any way that I could, so I learned how to use my hands better and hold the point and I think in the long run it really will help me in how I play the game."

This seaon, Ruiz totaled over 20 tackles with 1.5 sacks and six tackles-for-loss while helping his team get to 6-4 on the season.

On the recruiting front, things have begin to pick up steam and he has offers from the likes of South Dakota, Northern Colorado and Idaho and is getting a lot of interest from Fresno State and Utah State.

"I'm visiting South Dakota the first chance I can during January and I'm sure I will try and get out to the other schools as well," Ruiz said. "I am just looking for a place to play and a place I feel comfortable at."

Ruiz is on pace to finish up his AA degree in May and he will have two years to play two starting in the fall of 2014.
