Mayo Still Waiting For An Opportunity

A top cover-corner is something every team is looking for and one that is still looking for a home is Laney CB Jamal Mayo (5-11, 185). caught up with the talented defensive back recently and he updated us on where things stand currently on the recruiting front...

"Right now, things have been sorta quiet," Mayo told "I did meet with Washington when they were down here. The corners coach (Jimmy Lake) was down here and he said he's going to look at my film and said he liked what I could do on the field.

"Other than them, I really haven't had much in the way of recruiting going on.

"I have heard that after Signing Day (February 5th), if you haven't signed, then schools will wait until spring ball to see what they have or if they have any injuries and then things might start up for me again. We'll see what happens. I just have to be patient."

As a freshman in 2012, Mayo started every game and finished with a team-leading five interceptions and eight passes defensed while also totaling 24 tackles and this past season he racked up 30 tackles, a team-leading five interceptions and five pass breakups as well as a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

"I had a good season and felt I did pretty well," Mayo noted. "You can always do better and there are still things I can improve on, but for the most part I felt like I did as well as I could and I had a good season and we had a good season as a team."

Mayo is on pace to graduate in May and he will have three years to play two starting this fall.
