As a prep, Wyatt-Thayer, who graduated from Paradise (Ca.) High School, was recruited by several schools, but even though he had a 3.2 GPA, two missing classes prevented him from becoming a qualifier.
"I went up to Butte, but I just didn't fit in there and didn't feel comfortable, so I left and then I had a family illness come up that I had to help out with so I ended up taking a year off," Wyatt-Thayer told JCFootball.com. "Then I started to look at playing again and Sierra just seemed like the right fit. It was still pretty close to home, but not that close and I just liked the coaches and the program here."
As a freshman last fall, Wyatt-Thayer posted a team-leading 119 tackles and 16 tackles-for-loss to go along with four sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, an interception and five passes defensed.
Those outstanding numbers are even more impressive when you consider that it was his first year playing the position.
"In high school, I always played safety, so last year was the first time I'd played linebacker," Wyatt-Thayer noted. "I have good feet, quick feet and that helps me make plays. I've got good instincts and I'm pretty fast for a linebacker and that's another thing that really helps me."
On the recruiting front, Wyatt-Thayer saw plenty of interest in his services this spring and he has four early offers with more schools showing him attention as well.
"I have offers right now from Hawaii, Georgia State, Fresno State and San Diego State," Wyatt-Thayer said. "My coaches talked to some other schools and recently Oregon has been talking to me pretty consistently, so I could get more soon, but I'm not sure yet on that."
Wyatt-Thayer is a good student and is on pace to finish up his two-year degree in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2014 football season.
