Mahoni Is Drawing Attention

A JUCO offensive lineman who is getting some attention from four-year schools as we approach the start of the 2014 football season is College of San Mateo OT Kiola Mahoni (6-4, 288) and he updated JCFootball.com recently on where things stand and what he's been focusing on this offseason...

"The offseason has been good for us. We have been working out as a team, doing one-on-ones and stuff like that and I have been working hard on my pass-blocking," Mahoni told JCFootball.com recently. "I feel really comfortable as a run-blocker. It's something I have done for a long time, but I need to improve as a pass-blocker and that's been where my focus has been this offseason."

Helping Mahoni on the aggressiveness front is his status as a top rugby player.

"Rugby really helps me with my physicality," Mahoni said. "It really helps me bring that aspect to the game of football."

As a freshman last fall, Mahoni played left tackle for CSM and he's starting to draw attention from four-year programs looking to add a versatile lineman, who can play almost anywhere along the line, to their roster.

"I have an offer from Cincinnati right now," Mahoni noted. "The schools that I have been talking to so far have been Oregon State, Arizona State and Mississippi State. My coaches have said I just need to keep working and that the offers will come when they get to see me this fall."

As a prep at Woodside (Ca.) High School, Mahoni was a solid prospect, but he was unable to get qualified for a scholarship so he decided to head to San Mateo to play for the Bulldogs.

"The program here, they basically act like a D-1 program. They really are top notch and they take care of their players and treat us right," Mahoni said. "The way they get you ready for the next level and prepare every week is amazing and when I saw it all for myself, I knew this is the place I needed to be."

Mahoni is on pace to finish up his academic work in May and he will have three years to play two following the 2014 football season.
