Byers Is Up To Four Offers

Entering the 2014 football season, one of the top multi-purpose athletes in the California JUCO ranks is Antelope Valley ATH Alex Byers (6-2, 170). So far, the talented prospect has four offers and more schools are eyeing his talents and could be extending full rides his way after they get a look at him on the field early next month...

"Things have been going really good," Byers told "I have offers from Texas State, New Mexico, UAB and Georgia State and I've been talking a lot with a bunch of other schools -- Baylor, Boise State, Kansas, Utah, Utah State, Arizona and Arizona State and a few other schools too."

As a freshman in 2013, Byers had 23 receptions for 398 yds and six touchdowns as a receiver and he managed to return 14 kicks for 496 yards and three touchdowns.

"One thing I always try to do is make a play when I get the ball in my hands," Byers said. "If you get me in space, I can do what I do best and that's make guys miss and I feel like I can take it the distance every time I get the ball in my hands.

"My coaches like to use me in a lot of different ways. I was in the slot some last year, but I was mostly outside where I could use my speed (4.32) and my ball skills.

"I also returned kicks too, so they tried to give me chances to make plays and I did that to the best of my abilities."

Byers enjoyed a solid prep career at Spoto High School in Tampa, Florida. He was unable to qualify for a scholarship to a four-year school, so he decided to join a friend who had moved to AVC the year before.

"He liked it out here and he said I should give it a try," Byers said. "I really have enjoyed my time here and I think it was the right move for me although I miss my family and my friends, but I gotta do what I can to get myself to a four-year school and AVC sure seemed like the best chance I had to do that."

Byers is on pace to finish up his two-year degree in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2014 football season.
