Sterling-Lowe Ready to Lock It Down For Laney

Laney CB Yusef Sterling-Lowe (6-0, 175) is just what most four-year schools are looking for in a corner. He's fearless, he runs well and after splitting time in the secondary as a freshman last season, the talented corner is ready to make his presence felt this fall...

"Last year, we had a couple of guys who played for us that were established starters (Quinton Dent and Jamal Mayo), so it was hard to get playing time, but I got into the rotation and got a lot of reps," Sterling-Lowe told "This year, I know I'm the guy that the coaches are looking for to be a playmaker outside, so that's been a big focus for me to get ready for the season."

As a freshman this past fall, Sterling-Lowe totaled 29 tackles, one sack, four tackles-for-loss, one fumble recovery, three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and one blocked kick.

"I'm really good in press and my zone coverage is good too, so I'd say I am pretty balanced in what I can do," Sterling-Lowe noted. "If it's cover-two, then I will do that no problem. If man-to-man is the call, then I can do that too. It really doesn't matter to me."

On the recruiting front, no offers have been forthcoming to this point, but a handful of schools have told him they will be watching him this fall.

"Utah State, TCU, UTEP and Arizona were all talking to me this spring," Sterling-Lowe said. "They want to see me this fall and see the size I've gained and also see how I do now that I'm a full-time starter."

Sterline-Lowe prepped at nearby McClymonds (Oakland, Ca.) High School and after he graduated, Laney was the only school that showed an interest in him.

"It's close to home and they have a good program here and the coaches really wanted me, so it was a pretty easy choice for me," Sterling-Lowe added.

He is on pace to finish up his two-year degree in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2014 football season.
