Stuart Is A Force For Moorpark

After spending a season at Colorado, current Moorpark DE Johnny Stuart (6-4, 265) decided he wanted a fresh start so he signed with the Raiders and enjoyed a solid redshirt freshman season with them last fall. Now, with only one season left at the JUCO level, the talented defensive lineman hopes a fast start this fall notches him some offers...

"I signed with Colorado out of high school, but then the coaches left and I just wasn't happy there so I wanted to get a fresh start and give myself a chance to play at that level again," Stuart told recently.

Stuart joined his older brother, Mike, who was the defensive coordinator for the Raiders.

As a redshirt freshman last fall, the younger Stuart worked his way into the defensive line rotation, playing mostly defensive end on the strongside, totaling 18 tackles, seven sacks, six tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

"When I came out of (Westlake) high school, I was more of a run stopper because of my strength," Stuart noted. "But over time, I've really improved as a pass-rusher and now I feel like I can do both pretty equally and that will really help me stay on the field for every down."

Recruiting has been a bit tepid for Stuart as he's yet to garner an offers, but several schools made contact during the spring and he hopes four-year coaches keep an eye on what he does this season.

"During the spring, I heard from a few schools and I took an unofficial visit recently to UNLV and Arizona and San Diego State just to see them practice and what their programs are all about," Stuart said. "Hawaii and Old Dominion are also in contact with me, but I haven't heard much from them lately, but that's probably because of the summer and their season is starting up now."

Stuart is a very good student and he's on pace to finish up his two-year degree in December and he will have two years to play two following the 2014 football season.
