Safety Sterling Hammond from Essex High School in Tappahannock, Virginia turned heads last season and multiple schools have reached out to him. Louisville, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech have all offered the talented prospect and ECU became the most recent school to offer last week.
Hammond received his official offer from the Pirates in the mail a week ago. While he’s excited about it, Hammond admitted he’s been trying not to think about recruiting too much.
With so many coaches hitting him up it’s hard not to pay attention, which is why Hammond has decided to sit back and enjoy the process.
“I haven’t thought about a list of top schools yet,” said the 6-foot, 190-pound Hammond.
Luckily for ECU, Hammond has a bit of a connection to the school – his defensive back coach at Essex attended ECU. His input about the environment has sparked interest in Hammond.
“I’m excited about my ECU offer,” said Hammond. “My coach always talks about how (ECU) is a great place. I’m going to take a visit this fall and may got check out a game day.”
Coaches will be enticed to hear that this recruit has a date set in his mind for his commitment. October 17 will be the day, Hammond has confirmed that on that date he will pledge to a school. A successful visit to ECU before then could make or break his recruitment.
This summer Hammond has been working on a number of things to improve his game. Foot speed has been his biggest concern throughout his training and he has also worked on his man coverage. Hammond admitted he can’t wait for the season. It should be a big fall for him at Essex.
