Recruiting Picks Up For Johnson

After a solid sophomore season, New Mexico Military S Jawon Johnson (6-2, 205) has seen recruiting pick up over the past few weeks. The talented defensive back has three offers to his name, more schools eyeing his talents and he's also set up his first two official visits...

"I have offers right now from Florida A&M, Hampton and Arkansas Pine Bluff," Johnson told JCFootball.com recently. "I will visit Hampton on January 16th and Arkansas Pine Bluff this weekend (December 5th)."

In addition to those three schools, Johnson is hearing from several others including Ball State, South Dakota, North Carolina Central and Alabama A&M.

As a sophomore this past season for New Mexico Military, Johnson played free safety and some outside linebacker, finishing with 32 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and a pass breakup.

"I can play both, but I probably prefer safety just because I can play more freely," Johnson said. "I'm pretty good in space so that allows me to cover ground and make plays.

"This (past) offseason I worked a lot on my footwork and backpedal drills. I wanted to be smoother in and out of my breaks and get better jumps on the ball and those really helped me this season."

Johnson is on pace to finish up his two-year degree in May and he will have three years to play two starting in 2015.
