2017 Itawamba RB Octavius Matthews talks early recruiting

2017 Itawamba RB Octavious Matthews (6-2, 200) has two early offers and several other schools are also evaluating what he can do on the field. The talented runner updated JCFootball.com recently on how his offseason is progressing and where things stand on the recruiting front...

"I have an offer from Mississippi State and UAB so far," Matthews told JCFootball.com. "The other main schools I've been talking with are Louisville and Georgia, but they haven't offered yet."

Matthews took a visit to UAB over the weekend and he's working on setting up a visit to see Mississippi State although nothings has been set up to this point.

As a freshman last season, Matthews led the Indians with 808 yards to go along with four touchdowns on 94 carries.

"I'm definitely a speed guy," Matthews said. "I can run between the tackles or get outside and run away from people. I feel like I can do whatever it takes to be successful and help my team. It really just depends on the play call."

Matthews has been hard at work this offseason improving several aspects of his game that he hopes will help take him to the next level.

"Definitely footwork and staying low," Matthews noted. "Those are the things I am working on the most right now just to make my game that much better and so I can be that much harder to stop."

As a prep at North Jackson High School in Stevenson, Alabama, Matthews was unable to qualify, so he began to look around for a JUCO program that would help him to get is academics in order while also keeping his eyes focused on the future and playing at the next level.

"I felt like ICC was a home for me when I came up on my visit," Matthews recalled.

Matthews is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2016 football season.
