The Vikings are now 2-0. SUNY Morrisville fell to 0-3 with the loss.
The Northeast Football Conference matchup, which was played at La Salle Institute due to construction of a minor-league baseball stadium at Hudson Valley, raised $400 for the New York City rescue efforts. The $3 admission fee was waived and donations were collected as part of a college-wide effort coordinated by Hudson Valley's Student Life & Student Services department. The $400 will be turned over to the Salvation Army.
After Hudson Valley fell behind by a touchdown early, Dylan Cooper (Saratoga H.S.) hit Miller with a 33-yard scoring strike in the first quarter to even the score. Justin Kastner (Hudson) then connected with Miller for a game-winning 68-yard touchdown with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter.
Yardage-wise, Miller, a second-year player who is being recruited by several major Division I colleges, now has three of the top four receiving games in Hudson Valley's 32-year history.
"I just did what I could for the team," Miller said. "I'd have been just as happy if it had been someone else doing it. It just felt good to get out and do something positive."
Derrick Dyer (Roosevelt H.S.) also scored twice for Hudson Valley. First, he grabbed a seven-yard toss in heavy traffic from Cooper early in the second quarter. Then, he returned a kickoff 90 yards with just 35 seconds left in the first half, giving the Vikings a 19-14 halftime edge.
Kastner completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 175 yards and Cooper completed three of five attempts for 55 yards. Both quarterbacks tossed two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Hudson Valley's defense held SUNY Morrisville to 159 yards of total offense, including just 35 through the air. The Vikings forced two turnovers and allowed SUNY Morrisville to convert on just three of 15 third- and fourth-down efforts, including none in the first half.
Freshman defensive lineman Paul Haynes (Hudson) recorded two quarterback sacks and five tackles for the Vikings. Lou Funaro (Mechanicville) had seven tackles, including three for a loss, and a sack. La'Ronn Paulk (Corcoran H.S.) blocked a punt and contributed a sack and four tackles for a loss.
Hudson Valley travels to Dean Community College (Massachusetts) for a 1:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 22.
