All-purpose back Jonathan Smith, who played at East L.A. in 1999, led the way with 240 total yards and 4 touchdowns. Quarterback Nathan Chandler passed for 304 yards and 2 TDs though he also threw 3 interceptions. Linebacker James Griffin had 3 ½ sacks to lead the defense, which allowed just one touchdown and that came on a fake field goal play.
Pasadena took the early lead on a 26-yard run by Cazmir Hill one play
after linebacker Jeff Runnells recovered a fumble.
But the Huskies answered back with a drive of their own that
ended with a 26-yard field goal by Johnny Walaikul.
The first quarter ended with Pasadena ahead, 7-3.
Then Smith started scoring touchdowns.
His first score came on an 11-yard run with 9:05 left in the
half. His second scoring
run came less than 3 minutes later on a 19-yard burst behind a
spectacular block by goard Paul Schiffer.
The Lancers added another score on an 18-yard pass from Chandler
to Octavius Spencer with just 32 seconds left in the half to make it
28-3 at intermission.
After halftime, East L.A. came out fired up.
After an interception by Wahi Traylor, the Huskies drove to the
Lancer 13 yard line and lined up as if to attempt a 30-yard field goal.
Instead, Kerry Bonilla ran the ball past the surprised Pasadena
defense for East L.A.'s only touchdown of the afternoon.
But Smith wasn't finished scoring yet.
His third TD looked remarkably similar to his second as he burst
around the left side behind another big block by Schiffer.
This one was from 11 yards out.
After a Joe Timchenko FG made it 38-10, Smith scored his 4th
touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Chandler.
That closed out the scoring at 45-10.
The final catch gave Smith 122 yards receiving on 6 catches to go with his 66 yards rushing on just 6 attempts and 2 kickoff returns for 52 yards. His 4th TD was also Chandler's last pass of the day and put Chandler over the 300-yard passing mark. Tight End Ryan Antle hauled in 6 catches to tie Smith for game-high honors.
