Bogarin leads Panthers to win over Citrus
GLENDORA-Chaffey College's John Bogarin made the most of his chances by scoring on two touchdown runs and returning a kickoff for touchdown to lead the Panthers to a 51-13 win at Citrus College on Saturday.
"Once the coaches gave me the chance I made the best out of it," said Bogarin, a freshman from Moreno Valley. "I thought I'd get more chances with the offensive line we've got. You could put a mediocre running back in there and get 10 yards a pop."
After a scoreless first quarter the Panthers got on the scoreboard on an 11-yard run toucdhown by Andrae Perry with 12:45 left in the first half.
With 3:36 left in the second quarter Devon Hudspeth ran 3 yards up the gut for a touchdown, giving Chaffey a 14-0 lead.
"In the first quarter we came out a little lackadaisical," said Bogarin. "We picked up in the second half. The coaches got us together and gave us a pep talk so we would raise our level of intensity."
Citrus' Jamont Adams returned the second half kickoff 86 yards to give the Owls a first-and-goal from the Panthers 5. Three plays later Reza Ghostinat hit Nicholas Terrazas in the right corner of the end zone for a 7-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 14-6.
Bogarin scored on a 4-yard run through the Owls defense to raise Chaffey's lead to 21-6 with 8:22 left in the third quarter.
Johnathan Palmer nailed a 35-yard field goal to make it 24-6. On the Panthers next series Perry took a screen pass from Jeff Disney in the left flats, reversed field, followed blockers and raced up the right sideline for an 86-yard touchdown with13:09 left in the game to up the Panthers lead to 31-6.
Bogarin scored his second touchdown of the game from 5 yards out to give the Panthers a 38-6 lead.
Citrus' Terrazas caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Rodriguez to cut the lead to 38-13.
Bogarin then took the ensuing onside kick and saw daylight for a 40-yard kickoff return for touchdown to increase the Panthers advantage to 45-13.
"Usually the coaches tell us to fall on the ball, but I couldn't resist the opening," said Bogarin. "It came right up to me on a one-hopper and I wanted to score a touchdown."
Next Saturday Chaffey hosts San Bernardino Valley at 3 p.m. in a Foothill Conference game and Bogarin said he liked what he saw on defense.
"It goes both ways," said Bogarin. "If our offense picks it up then the defense will want to play well and vice versa."
