Canyons Tops Orange Coast

Marquise Brown scored 4 touchdowns, 3 on pass receptions and another on an 84-yard kickoff return, to lead #17 College of the Canyons to its second straight win to start the season, 42-19, Saturday against visiting Orange Coast College in Santa Clarita.

Brown scored the game's first touchdown on a 61-yard pass from C.J. Williams midway through the first quarter to give Canyons (2-0) the early lead. After Orange Coast tied the game on a 17-yard touchdown run by Derrick Hunt, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to put the Cougars back in front, and Canyons led the rest of the game.

After David Wilder intercepted a halfback option pass to give Canyons the ball with under a minute to go in the first half, Brown caught a 34-yard touchdown pass, again from Williams, to push the Cougars' lead to 21-7 at the break.

Orange Coast (1-1) scored early in the second half when Kody Whitaker threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Hal Walker. The extra point was wide right, and might have been partially deflected by the Cougars, keeping the score at 21-13.

Midway through the third quarter, Canyons coach Ted Iacenda inserted Louis Eusebi into the game at quarterback. Two plays later Eusebi broke free for a 61-yard run to the Pirates' 14; at the end of the play Orange Coast's Zoauntarrious Brunt stripped the ball out of his hands, but Leo Lambert III recovered the fumble for the Cougars. Moments later, Lambert fumbled, but Eusebi recovered to again retain possession for COC. Then, facing 4th and 20, Eusebi threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Brown to push the Cougar lead to 15 points 28-13.

Orange Coast had a chance to make it a one-score game once more when fullback Shane Beaver scored on a 1-yard run to cap a six-play drive. But Pirates' coach Kevin Emerson elected to try for the two-point conversion to make up for the missed extra point following the last Orange Coast touchdown. And when Whitaker's pass attempt fell incomplete, the Cougars maintained a two-score advantage at 28-19 with 12:45 to play.

If there was any remaining doubt as to the game's outcome, it disappeared just over a minute later when Wes Fitzpatrick caught a pass from C.J. Williams – back in at quarterback – and took it 37 yards for a touchdown to cap a quick 4-play drive. That made it 35-19 with 11:14 left. Tylan McBride scored the final touchdown of the night on a 55-yard run in the final minute to close out the scoring.

Brown finished with 5 catches for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns, and overall he had 313 yards and 4 touchdowns including kickoff and punt returns. Williams completed 9 of 15 passes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns. And the Canyons defense, which registered 11 sacks on opening night against Antelope Valley, followed that with 5 more against Orange Coast.

For Orange Coast, Whitaker completed 24 of 35 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown. Hunt had 117 yards on 16 carries and scored one touchdown. Defensive lineman Daniel Garcia had 2 of the Pirates' 4 quarterback sacks.
