Palomar, Pasadena Pre-season Picks in Mission

COSTA MESA – Defending division champion Palomar and perennial contender Pasadena were chosen as pre-season favorites to win their respective Mission Conference divisional championships, Thursday afternoon at the annual media luncheon at Orange Coast College.

Palomar was picked to finish in the top spot by seven pollsters and had 49 points, 10 ahead of runner-up Long Beach. Cerritos (32) edged Mt. San Antonio (31) for the third spot, while district rivals Orange Coast (24) and Golden West finished up the new American Division.

The Lancers, who finished second in the Northern Division last season behind Long Beach, garnered six first-place votes and edged out Saddleback by a single point in the voting, 53-52. The Gauchos were followed by El Camino, Fullerton, Riverside and Santa Ana to round out the voting in the new National Division.

As it did two years ago, the Mission Conference realigned its divisions to maintain a sense of balance among its members. A formula based on past records along with a sensitivity to long-standing rivalries was developed. The divisions will be reexamined in two more years with a possible realignment occurring again.

Voting was done based on divisional alignment, with a first place vote worth six points down to one point for a 6th place tally.
