Long Beach Comes Back to Beat Moorpark

Jake Maier passed for 371 yards and 3 touchdowns, with Jacob Welch catching 8 of those passes for 165 yards and 2 scores, as Long Beach overcame a pair of early 15-point deficits for a 43-29 win over host Moorpark Saturday evening.

A week after losing a 17-point lead against now-#1-ranked Saddleback, Long Beach unleashed a similar comeback against Moorpark. The Vikings (2-1) trailed, 15-0, when Maier unleased a 42-yard touchdown pass to Welch early in the second quarter. It was 22-7 when that duo hooked up for a 53-yard scoring strike midway through the quarter, and Maier threw his third touchdown pass of the quarter to Jabari Minix, a 62-yarder that allowed the Vikings to tie the score at halftime, 22-22.

After all that, the second half belonged to Long Beach. Jason Floyd scored on a 6-yard run to cap a short drive following a failed onsides kick attempt by Moorpark to start the second half. Tyree Harris scored a pair of touchdowns and reached the 100-yard mark rushing as the Vikings secured the win in the second half.

Early on, things seemed to go Moorpark's way, resulting in the early Raiders leads. Isaiah Johnson scored on a 5-yard run to cap a drive that was kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty 10:34 into the game. Then on the extra point try, the kick was blocked, but the ball bounced to holder Corbin Covey, who picked it up and then zigged and zagged through the Vikings until reaching the end zone for a 2-point conversion. A 12-yard LBCC punt set up another scoring drive for Moorpark, with Johnson scoring on a 4-yard run just before the end of the first quarter.

After Maier's first touchdown pass to Welch, Moorpark answered with another drive into Viking territory. The Raiders faced a 4th and 4 and lined up for what would have been a 48-yard field goal. The kick was blocked, but the Viking who blocked it – Donald West – was flagged for leaping into the pile to block it. That penalty resulted in a first down, and on the next play Kado Brown threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Osuchukwu to push Moorpark's lead back to 15 at 22-7.

Perhaps the key sequence of the game came later in the second quarter with Moorpark still holding a 22-14 lead. Brown broke free from deep in his own territory for what became a 75-yard run, only to be caught by LBCC's Kobe Williams and tackled at the Viking 14. But on the next play Brown fumbled, and Gilbert "Bubba" Varela recovered for Long Beach. Two plays later Maier threw the 62-yard touchdown pass to Minix, and then threw to Marcus Moore for a 2-point conversion that tied the score. Long Beach City never trailed again.

Another amazing play for Long Beach that is all but invisible in the box score was a 24-yard punt by LBCC's Miguel Rodriguez. With the Vikings holding a 29-22 lead, Rodriguez – in for starting punter Jared Alves after the 12-yard punt – lined up to kick, only to watch as the snap sailed high over his head. But Rodriguez raced back, scooped up the bouncing ball, turned quickly and managed to get away a punt that was downed at the Raider 15.

Maier finished with 21 completions from 33 attempts, good for 371 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Welch led all receivers with his 8 catches for 165 yards and 2 scores. Harris led all rushers with 108 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 11 carries, but Floyd had a solid game as well with 94 yards and a touchdown on just 9 carries. Marcus Reynolds had 2.5 quarterback sacks and Tanoa Seau had 1.5 to lead the Viking defense.

For Moorpark, Brown was spectacular, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns while also rushing 28 times for 98 yards. Johnson had 13 carries for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Osuchukwu had 5 catches for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jordan Flack led the defense with a pair of quarterback sacks.

Notes: Both teams entered 1-1. Long Beach entered ranked #7 in California while Moorpark entered ranked #30. A roughing the punter penalty kept Moorpark's 1st TD drive alive, the 12-yd punt set up Moorpark's 2nd TD drive and a leaping penalty on what had been a blocked field goal kept Moorpark's 3rd TD drive alive. On Moorpark's first XPA the kick was blocked but holder Covey recovered the ball and ran it in for 2 points. Long Beach's tying TD came after Varela's fumble recovery. The fumble came one play after Brown broke free for a 75-yard run but was caught by 5-Kobe Williams at the LBCC 11. Rodriguez' 2nd punt was 24 yds but came after he tracked down a snap over his head late in the 3rd quarter with LB ahead, 29-22.
