185-pound sophomore, who is a native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., began
garnering attention last year after finishing third in the state with a
40.6 yard average on 38 punts. Jason was unanimously voted first
team All-Western State Conference Northern Division.
Daily can turn over spirals consistently and get great hang time on his punts. He also understands how to place the ball and avoid touchbacks. His only short coming as a freshman was a slow, three step approach. However, he worked hard in the off-season to cut down his approach to a much quicker two-step release which should help him this season. "This summer I worked hard on changing from a three-step to a two-step release. It's very difficult because you're fighting muscle memory. I went to a couple of camps to help with it," said Daily.
Two weeks ago against Santa Ana Daily had a long punt of 59 yards. "That was in the air," said Daily.
In addition to punting Daily is handling kickoff duties. "I get them into the endzone pretty consistently. I am also the holder on field goals and PATs," he said.
When he's not playing football, Daily is on the baseball diamond striking out opposing batters. A top baseball pitching prospect, Daily was drafted in the 40th round by the San Francisco Giants but he didn't sign a contract. His goal is to double-sport in college.
So far, Washington, Arizona State, and Texas A&M have been recruiting Daily the hardest -- and all have good or excellent baseball programs. USC was a favorite of Daily's but he was sketchy as to whether they're still in the picture. Some schools, such as Oregon, would like to have Daily on the football field but the lack of a baseball program hurts their chances significantly. Others sending letters include Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Texas. Daily plans to take a football scholarship and then walk on for baseball.
His versatility and athleticism will undoubtedly make him a hot property come December. Daily is a mid-year transfer.
