JC Football: Fullerton 59, Golden West 27

Jordan Hoy passed for 332 yards and 4 touchdowns and also ran for a score to lead Fullerton past Golden West, 59-27, giving the host Hornets a share of the National Division Central Conference championship and a berth in the SCFA playoffs Saturday afternoon at Yorba Linda HS.

Hoy threw touchdown passes of 20 and 53 yards to Justin Walker, allowing Fullerton (9-1, 4-1) to dig out from an early 6-0 deficit, and scoring of 15 yards to Christian Williams and 23 yards to DeAndre McNeal as the Hornets pulled away. His 6-yard touchdown run early in the second half gave Fullerton a 45-6 lead, and the rout was on.

Golden West (4-6, 3-2) had a chance to win a share of the conference title and could have eliminated Fullerton from the playoff hunt with a victory. And the Rustlers started out well enough, putting together a 13-play drive on their first possession of the day, taking a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal by Quinton Conaway. Then on the next play from scrimmage, Hoy fumbled, and Jamie Diaz recovered for Golden West on the Hornet 19. That led to a 29-yard Conaway field goal that gave the Rustlers a 6-0 lead.

But after that it was all Fullerton. The Hornets needed just three plays to answer, with Hoy throwing a 56-yard pass to McNeal to get close and the 20-yard touchdown pass to Walker to score. Jonathan Aguilar's extra point gave the Hornets a 7-6 lead after one quarter.

Fullerton broke the game open, however, with a stunning 31-0 second quarter that featured three touchdown passes by Hoy, a pick-six and the unveiling of the Hornets' secret weapon soon to be known as the Fullerton Fridge.

After a Golden West punt, Hoy threw a quick slant pass to Walker that became a 53-yard touchdown pass. Then Golden West quarterback Adam Vance fumbled, with Fullerton's Montre Bonner recovering at the Ruster 11. That led to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Ho to Williams. The defense got into the act less than a minute later when Xavier Chisholm intercepted a Vance pass and carried it 9 yards into the end zone to make it 28-6.

Golden West tried to answer and drove to the Hornet 26, but an interception by Jovon Burriss near the goal line ended the threat. Then Fullerton drove 97 yards for another touchdown. Most of the yardage was grained when Hoy threw a 49-yard pass to Assante Wilder. But the final 2 yards came courtesy of 340-pound reserve lineman Samuel Davis, who lined up in the backfield. On his first carry of the year, he powered into the end zone the way the similarly-built William “Refrigerator” Perry did for the Chicago Bears in the 1986 Super Bowl to make it 35-6.

Aguilar added a 37-yard field goal just before halftime to make it 38-6 at the break. Then Hoy scored on a 6-yard run on Fullerton's first drive of the second half to push the lead to 45-6. After Vance threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Zimari Manning for Golden West's first touchdown of the way, Hoy threw his 4th touchdown pass of the afternoon, a 23-yarder to McNeal, on his final pass of the day to make it 52-13.

Hoy completed 14 of 22 passing for his 332 yards, throwing for 4 touchdowns and rushing for another. McNeal caught 5 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Walker had just 3 catches but they accounted for 76 yards and 2 scores. Jovon Burriss rushed for 69 yards on 5 carries, and Phillip Butler had 11 carries for 48 yards.

For Golden West, Vance completed 29 of 45 passes for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns. Darren Sandoval rushed for 96 yards and the Rustlers' third touchdown, a 68-yard scamper, on 11 carries. Starter Gabriel Ford had 13 carries for 47 yards but suffered what appeared to be a leg injury while recovering a Golden West fumble late in the first half and played sparingly in the second half. Manning had 8 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

The win lifts Fullerton into the Southern California Football Association playoffs, and the Hornets will host Northern Conference champion Ventura next Saturday at 1 pm at Yorba Linda HS.

Notes: Fullerton entered ranked #2 in South-National and #7 in the nation (JCFootball.com) and improves to 9-1 overall, 4-1 in conference. Golden West entered ranked #11 in South-National and finishes 4-6 overall and 3-2 in conference. After GW's 1st FG, Margain recovered a fumble at the Hornet 19 to set up GW's 2nd FG. But then it was all Fullerton. Williams' TD came after Bonner recovered a Vance fumble. Ford recovered a Golden West fumble (bad snap) but appeared to injure his leg on the play and barely played thereafter. Posey forced the fumble that Harvey recovered; 7-Inda forced the fumble that Garcia recovered. Davis is a 340-pound reserve OL and that was his 1st rushing attempt of the season.
