Recruiting Picks Up For Smith

2017 Riverside S Kahani Smith (6-2, 180) is a versatile athlete with great ball skills and in recent weeks he's seen recruiting pick up...

"Things have started to pick up," Smith told JCFootball.com recently. "UTEP came by last week and the coach called me this weekend and he said they are getting my transcripts and he's going to call me on Monday night. He also said not to make any plans next weekend because they are going to bring me in for a visit next weekend."

In addition to his recent interest from the Miners, Smith also has offers from three FCS and some FBS programs have also been calling.

"I have offers from Alabama A&M, Arkansas Pine-Bluff and Incarnate Word," Smith said. "I have been talking a lot with Oregon StateKansasUNLV and New Mexico as well."

As a sophomore this past season, Smith started 10 games for the Tigers and finished with 36 tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss, four interceptions and a team-leading 11 pass breakups.

"I played more free safety than anything, but I also played some rover and even dropped down and covered the slot," Smith noted. "I feel really comfortable playing center field because I have good anticipation and ball skills and I don't feel like anyone can beat me deep."

Smith enjoyed a solid prep career at Lakewood (Ca.) High School and he signed with Dixie State, but after a year there, he decided a change was in order.

"I just wasn't happy there, so I talked to some guys from Dixie who had gone to Riverside and they said it was a really good program so I just thought it was the right move for me," Smith said. "I had some other options, but the school here and the coaches are great and it was the best move for me."

Smith is set to graduate in January and he will have three years to play two starting in 2017.

We will have more on Smith in the coming days as he nears making his decision.
