Preview Hudson Valley vs. Dean

Hudson Valley Community College's football team will play Northeast Football Conference (NFC) rival Dean College at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 22. The game will be played in Franklin, Mass., at Dean College's Longley Field.

The Vikings (2-0) defeated SUNY Morrisville, 27-20, on September 15. All-American wide receiver Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.) had two touchdowns and a single-game school-record 189 yards receiving to earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week status. Dean College (0-1) lost to Springfield College's JV team, 27-0, on September 9.

In week four of the 2000 campaign, Hudson Valley rolled to a 39-9 victory against Dean. Hudson Valley scored 21 points in the third quarter to put Dean away. Gary Jones led all rushers with 123 yards and two touchdowns and Jim Canfield contributed two interceptions.

Hudson Valley won five of its final six games in 2000, finishing the season with a 6-3 record and winning the NJCAA Region III title. Dean posted a 4-4 record.

Since the 1997 inception of the NFC, Hudson Valley owns a 3-1 edge in the series against Dean.

On offense this year, the Vikings are led by Miller, who holds Hudson Valley's record for receptions in a game (11). He has 13 receptions for 258 yards and four touchdowns this season. Defensively, second-year linebacker Gary Smith (Concord H.S, DE) has 20 tackles. Linebacker Mike Miller (Firestone H.S., OH) also has 20 tackles.

The Vikings are averaging 308.0 yards of total offense per game while holding opponents to 122.5 yards per contest. While Hudson Valley has passed for 376 yards and four touchdowns, the Vikings have allowed their opponents to gain just 95 yards and no touchdowns through the air.
