This week we look at winning (and losing) streaks around the nation as well as game highlights from the weekend. AND LOOKING BACK - This writer had the pleasure of introducing Al "Hoagy" Carmichael at the inaugural SANTA ANA COLLEGE Hall of Fame shindig and discovered some little known facts about him. Lots more too...

Those that have ended – REEDLEY's 13-game win string was broken by Santa Rosa, 35-10 last Saturday night.  PALOMAR Had their 7-game streak working until losing to Canyons 21-16 in OT.  On the losing end, DESERT broke their 19-game skein with a 24-19 verdict over East Los Angeles.  EASTERN ARIZONA had dropped 11 straight until they upset Scottsdale 19-17 and SAN JOSE ended its losing string at nine with a 28-26 triumph over DeAnza.  In the season opener, HARPER put an end to JOLIET's 21-game victory streak with a 22-21 win.

DIXIE – 12
SNOW – 7

SAN FRANCISCO's swarming defense held West Valley to just 77 yards total offense with a minus 25 rushing.

The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA would be able to use FS Scott Ware right now.  The 6-3, 210-pound SANTA ROSA back, who has already committed to the Trojans, broke up 7 passes and made a complete nuisance of himself against Reedley Sat. as the Bear Cubs pulled off a 35-10 upset.  Troy has had a series of injuries in the backfield, but Will Poole, VENTURA and, Ronald Nunn, SAN FRANCISCO, are plugging the holes nicely.  Dennis O'Dwyer, SANTA ROSA, blocked a Reedley punt in the 3rd period when the score was just 19-10, for a safety, then following the kickoff Brandon Simpson caught a 52-yard TD from Jordan Borowics and it's suddenly 28-10.  SR's defense held, then sacked the punter after a bad snap and Borowics zipped a 9-yarder to Jesse Martinez for the finally score.

REEDLEY's great QB Robert Johnson, put on a gutty performance, playing despite an injured shoulder, but was able to complete just 14 of 36 for 130 yards, one a 30-yarder to Lester Shelton for the lone TD….

FRESNO and BUTTE put on a tight defensive battle with the Rams winning 14-5.  Tony Caviglia is now 4-0 vs. the Roadrunners since he went to Fresno.  FCC's Wayne Desmond only passed for 78 yards on 7 of 18, but one was a 19-yarder to Terrence Grant for a score.  He also ran 30 yards for the clincher with 7:50 left in the game.

PALOMAR's loss to Canyons was the first in regular season to a non-Mission Conference foe since September 1990. That little piece of trivia comes to you from the Comets' crack SID, Tom Saxe.

Jeff Sims, a former assistant under Bill Fisk at Mt. San Antonio, has a good thing going at MESABI RANGE in Minnesota.  The school brass are allowing him to recruit far and wide and he has done a good job of it.  His LB Jeremy Coley, is said to have already committed to Purdue.  Sims' big test will come Sept. 27 when his team hosts Tom Hosier's Rochester eleven.

NASSAU saw and conquered its first major obstacle, the ERIE Kats, 19-14.  It looks like smooth sailing until Oct. 18 when the Lions visit Georgia Military and Nov. 8 at Lackawanna…

TYLER, cruising along with a 3-0 record, will have to be at its best toward the end of the season when they close with 3 straight away games against Kilgore, Trinity Valley and NE Oklahoma…

COFFEYVILLE has yet to have a turnover in the first 3 games.  The Red Ravens have a tiger of a lad playing center.  Taylor Lewis is just 5-11 and 235 pounds, yet he is the core of the OL.  Facing an Independence NG who was 6-3, 335, Taylor won virtually every matchup and finished with an 84% grade. LB Maurios Williams, another smallish LB at 5-9, 220, had 8 tackles, 2 for losses and 3 QB hurries.

Meanwhile, down the road at BUTLER COUNTY, the regulars worked one half and found LB Lee Foliaki getting 9 tackles, RS LB Renaldo Davis, collect 9 solo and 6 assists in his first start and Joe Harris ran 22 times for 132 yards while scoring 4 times.  These two are heading for a great matchup on Sept. 27.  Harris is 2nd in the Kansas Juco ranks with 64 rushes for 392, but leads with 7 TDs.

LOOKING BACK  - This writer had the pleasure of introducing Al "Hoagy" Carmichael at the inaugural SANTA ANA COLLEGE Hall of Fame shindig and discovered some little known facts about him.  Would you believe he is now in FIVE Halls of Fame?

  1. Service, after 2 great years at El Toro Marine Base;
  2. Calif. Coaches for his tremendous 2 seasons at Santa Ana;
  3. the Green Bay Packers, after Vince Lombardi drafted him No. 1 and made him the NFL's first kick-return specialist;
  4. Orange County and now …
  5. Santa Ana College.  Al culminated his JC career scoring a TD in the Jr. Rose Bowl Game against Little Rock and his USC career scoring the only TD on a pass from Rudy Bukich in the Trojan's 7-0 victory over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, (The Pac-Ten's initial victory over the Big-10 on New Years).  SANTA ANA wisely included Keith Luhnow, who broke many of Carmichael's Don records in 1961, and Estrus Crayton, who piled up 4,062 all-purpose yards in 1989-90, along with former coaches Bill Cook and John Ward among a cast of 12.

TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, Coffeyville, Jones, Taft, Tyler and College of Sequoias were ranked in the top-5 in the early going, with TAFT surviving the 11-game rigors and winning the national title.  Gulf Coast, Miss. had their best team under George Sekul going 13-0 and finishing in 2nd place ahead of Hal Sherbeck's Fullerton Hornets.  EL CAMINO's Fr. QB Larry Egger set the new all-time JC completion mark with 231 and his receiver, Loren Richey the reception record by grabbing 83.  Ruben Rodrigues, SEQUOIAS punter finished his two years with a 44.3 average on 116 boots.  Jason Buck of RICKS was the defensive standout and later played for the Washington Redskins.

NORTHWEST Miss. showed a sturdy defense in loss to PEARL RIVER 17-7, allowing  just 4 for 24 in the air.  However, Raymond Dukes caught 3 of them for 102 yards…Ex-GROSSMONT WR Dante Hall had a great game for the Kansas City Chiefs, totaling 229 all-purpose yards vs. the Steelers.  He returned one kickoff 100 yards.  Shows what a 5-8, 187-pounder with speed can do…MODESTO held Hartnell to 5 of 17 passing for 40 yards and picked off 3…SIERRA's Keith Cage, who ripped off 245 yards in the opener vs. Diablo Valley, was held to 95 in 28 efforts by Siskiyous, but SIERRA won 41-6…

SNOW and PIMA were close in their air battle, 352 yards to 333, but SNOW had 133 rushing and the Badgers held Pima to minus 16 on the ground…HIBBING's Chris Jackson has 13 receptions for 249 yards in first 2 games…

CORRECTION on our pre-season All-American team, OT Matt Yocam of LONG BEACH, is not spelled Yocum.  Also, John Cicuto, GLENDALE, has a 13 yr record of 66-75-2, not 11….ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. JC football fans are marveling in the fact that all 5 teams are 2-0…

FINAL NOTE: George Killian, executive director of the NJCAA for practically forever, is retiring from the position next July.  He's moving to the international scheme of things.  So when will the NJCAA and California schools get together for a real national championship game?  It's way overdue and would certainly be good for JC football.
