Hank's Weekly JC Notebook

This week, our national notes focus on several big upcoming games and recap what we saw in-person last weekend. Also, plenty of "Did You Know?" tidbits, interesting stat highlights, and more from the desk of JC Grid-Wire.

LITTLE THIS –N- THAT

CUFF NOTES –

Some enormous scores last weekend, including: MT. SAN ANTONIO 66, Pasadena 7 and BLINN 69, Ranger 7.  Big yards too: BC had 626 in total yards and MSAC added up 614.

The MARIN 67, MONTEREY 54 score was large, but a long ways from the record set by SHASTA 73, MERCED 71 in 1998.

SAN JOAQUIN DELTA has a potent ground game.  Against Monterey, Brandon Harper gained 175 yards and frosh Lionel Scott 119.  Of course, they will need to be at their best Saturday night at FRESNO. Both teams come in with 3-0 records.

The lengthy roadtrip of Antwuan Guidry has finally ended in SAN FRANCISCO.  Once a Nebraska signee, he later spent two seasons at Hutchinson, although playing just one year there, and has now returned home to his old neighborhood.  Guidry is running behind Tim Brown, which means he doesn't see the ball much, but has been catching passes and returning punts.

WEST LOS ANGELES QB, Devin Hollis, is a Wisconsin transfer…Danny Southwick, once a QB prospect at Oregon State, is now at DIXIE STATE, where he shares the signal-calling duties with Adam Madsen.  After throwing 4 TD passes to WR Travis Brown last week in the 43-20 win over Scottsdale, Danny might be moving into the starter role…

BLINN is averaging 70.3 points in first three games, but admittedly has not faced the toughies yet.  They host KILGORE Saturday and if they get by the Rangers, they are for real. ..JONES COUNTY is averaging 231 on the ground and giving up just 31.7.  Bobcat CB, Quinten Sullivan, 5-9, 175, has 5 INTs in first 3 games.

PEARL RIVER, our choice to battle with Jones County for the Miss. South title, has a punter Trey Lunsford, 6-3, 195, averaging 43.9 after 12 punts.

DID YOU KNOW

THAT Danny Southwick, a former 4A QB of the year in Utah, is the stepson of nationally known TV star Larry King?

THAT SAN MATEO is the only JC in the country that has three Super Bowl head coaches that either went to school there or coached the Bulldogs?  John Madden, Bill Walsh, and Dick Vermeil, which is not a bad group.  In addition, Neal Dahlen, an NFL general manager, has 3 Super Bowl rings.

THAT Keno Walter-White, SAN DIEGO MESA, DB, a freshman from Rancho Bernardo, returned a kickoff from 2 yards deep in the end zone for a TD against Grossmont?

THAT according to rumor GROSMONT TE Xavier Campbell, a 6-4, 250-pounder, has never been on the losing end of a football score?  He comes from Concord DeLaSalle, a prep team that never loses, and GCC is 3-0.

THAT PASADENA's 66-7 loss to Mt. San Antonio is the worst home loss in school history and ties the all-time worst score, an identical 66-7 to El Camino there in 1999?

THAT as far as we know, FULLERTON's frosh LB Scott Genord, 6-2, 245, is the first JC to recover two fumbles in the end zone for touchdowns?  He did it Sat. vs. Palomar and brought the Hornets from behind only to lose 30-26.

ANOTHER SATURDAY OF WATCHING PARTS OR ALL OF THREE JC GAMES. HERE ARE ONE MAN's OPINIONS ON SOME OF THE OUTSTANDING ATHLETES OBSERVED.

PALOMAR 30, FULLERTON 26.  Pretty well-matched teams.  The Comet's Fr. QB Matt Pound, 6-2, 200, has a ways to go to be up to previous Palomar QBs in the skill dept. but he was 23 of 38 for 357 with 2 TDs and 1 INT.  CB Josh Hargis, 6-3, 175, had 3 picks.  CB Brandon Bell, 6-1, 195, hits like a pile-driver, as does safety Ron Rockett, 6-3, 190.  Chris Pino DT did not play and Taylor Schmidt, 6-5, 325, was solid.

FULLERTON -  LB John Morris, a Fresno St. bounceback, 6-2, 245, had 9 tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack and is perhaps the best LB we've seen this year along with SADDLEBACK's Ryan Powdrell.  K/P Sam Paulesco, 6-0, 185, had 4 punts for 50.5 avg. with 3 inside the 20, 1 inside the 5 and FGs of 48, 37, 41 and 36 yards.  Long kickoffs too.  CB/KR Larry Collins, 5-11, 200, INT for 37 yards, 2 KOR 66 yards and 7 tackles.  UCLA bounceback Justin Domineck, 5-11, 215 is a tough runner.

SANTA ANA 16, LONG BEACH 13.  RB Dartangan Johnson, just a freshman, 6-1, 200-pounder with good speed, ran for 190 yards on 40 lugs and looks like he will threaten some SANTA ANA records.  RT Marc Villafuerte, 6-4, 285, helps with a lot of those yards with his crisp blocking.  LONG BEACH   FS John Barnes, 6-1, 210, roams far and wide to make tackles and opened the game with a 94-yard kickoff return for a score.  Paul Ier, 5-11, 210, is a sturdy RB who gained 86 yards on 16 carries against a pretty stout defense.

EL CAMINO 27, GOLDEN WEST 7 – ECC might be back.  Fr. QB  Matt Engle, 6-0, 190, will get better and better.  Receivers maybe not as good as some in the past.  RB in the good hands of Chris Howard, 6-1, 210, 25 for 187 yards and 3 TDs.  He is hard to bring down.  So is FB Mafau Leilua, 6-0, 200, 7 for 71, 3 catches for 49.  SS Willie Ellison, 6-2, 205 had a really big game.  Every time GWC tried to get something going, Ellison put an end to it.  He's a bounceback from San Diego St. and should be able to play any place.   LB Elias Ellis, 5-11, 215, is a tad on the small side, but plays much bigger. He had 11 tackles and a 26-yard INT for a TD.  GOLDEN WEST is a much improved team from recent years and will win some more games. The Rustlers don't give up and play real tough defense headed by Fr. Lbers Thomas Mansfield, 6-1, 240, and Zeke Rodriguez, 5-10, 220.  The best offensive player is WR Ryan Partridge, 6-2, 205 8 catches for 97 yards.  He has great hands and moves.

HUGE GAMES ON TAP –

BUTLER COUNTY at COFFEYVILLE.  Two really solid teams.  All phases of the game about even. BC might have an edge with their ground game.  CCC slight edge to the defense.  We'll do a wrapup of this one in next week's issue.  If hammered against a wall to pick it, we would take COFFEYVILLE with slight hometown advantage.

SNOW @ DIXIE. Another tough one that could decide the WSFL title.  SNOW has a great passing game, but little rushing.  DIXIE seems a tad more balanced and playing at home so we would give them the edge.

EL CAMINO @ MT. SAN ANTONIO.  Could be a 45-44 shootout.  However, both teams have displayed defensive ability as well.  Both teams beat a good Moorpark squad.  Toss-up.

SAN JOAQUIN DELTA @ FRESNO.  Last year The Rams went to Delta and came away with a 49-37 verdict.  Both can score, but look for FCC to score more…

A FEW MORE NOTES -

NASSAU played in the teeth of the Hurricane last week and Omar Palmer's 109 yards on 29 carries plus 20 for 97 by Brendan Lucas spelled 18-14 win over Fordham JVs…Aaron Rodgers, ex-BUTTE QB has taken charge at California.  He was 20 of 37 for 263 vs. Illinois, who had 11 catches for 158 yards by Kelvin Hayden, a former JOLIET star…Bob O'Mera takes his ARIZONA WESTERN team to Roswell to play his son's (John) NEW MEXICO MILITARY team.
