Glendale Fends off ELAC

Using a powerful running attack and a bend-but-don't-break defense, the Glendale (CA) Vaqueros evened their record at 2-2 with a 21-13 win over East Los Angeles Sept. 29th at Glendale.

Glendale's offense was led by running backs Clifford Gatlin and Wes Jones, each of whom topped the 100-yard mark. QB Joseph Kroells had just 73 yards passing but was 10 of 16 with a TD toss and no interceptions.  Glendale finished the day without committing a turnover.

Darius Hodges rushed for 170 yards and scored a TD for the Huskies, who moved the ball up and down the field all afternoon.  However, despite piling up over 400 yards of offense and 25 first downs, East LA had just a single touchdown.  Three East LA quarterbacks combined for 148 yards passing, but each also threw an interception.  In all, East LA committed 4 turnovers.

Glendale took the opening kickoff and embarked on a 7-minute drive to the East LA 19.  However, when the drive stalled, the Vaqueros came away empty when Wilbur Martinez' 36-yard FG attempt sailed wide right.  East LA then marched down the field behind the running attack of Hodges, who gave the Huskies the early lead on a 17-yard TD run.  However, that would prove to be East LA's only touchdown of the game.

Glendale pulled even early in the second quarter on a 22-yard pass from Kroells to Jason Burkhart.  A 20-yard FG by East LA's Johnny Walaikul just before halftime gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead at intermission.

The second half consisted of long drives by both teams, but it was Glendale who was able to make the most of their opportunities.  Gatlin's 1-yard TD run gave Glendale their first lead at 14-10 just over 3 minutes into the third quarter.  East LA drew closer on a 36-yard FG by Walaikul later in the quarter but that was as close as they would get at 14-13.

East LA inserted their third quarterback of the day in the 4th, and Ray Otis moved the team down the field before misfiring on a handoff.  Derrick Leggin recovered the fumble for Glendale.  When East LA got the ball back, Otis again moved the team.  However, one of his passes was deflected and ended up in the hands of Glendale's Cedric Hardimon for the interception.  A few plays later, Wes Jones burst through the line from 42 yards out to make it 21-13 Vaqueros with just over 2 minutes left.

The Huskies had one last chance.  Hugo Avendano re-entered the game at QB and drove the team down the field, but as had happened several times before East LA came up empty.  Kenny Garcia's second interception of the day, a spectacular catch in the back of the end zone, sealed East LA's fate and gave the Vaqueros the 21-13 win.
